Loose halyard

We've retrieved ours with a long bamboo pole with a wire hook attached. I've seen suggestions to lash small rings to the halyard ends to use for grabbing if this happens in the future. Do you have wire leads on the halyards? They should come down near the deck level or close to it. Many jib halyards...

Bimini

Dear Rich - There is/was a picture of a nice one on the Chrysler Sailing Assoc. Site, www.geocities.com/The Tropics/Cabana/3135, altho the attachment points are hard to see. We may have talked about that one. I've been looking at some larger boats since your post, and the best arrangement seems to b...

deck soft spot repair

Devin - If you haven't already made your repair, I've run across an excellent book, "The Boat Repair Manual" by George Buchanan, Gulf Publishing Co (1985) which is a short encyclopedia. It may have been mentioned in an earlier post by someone else. Also, you probably know West Marine carri...

broken mast step

Sorry to hear of the problem - are you using the the optional mast erection bridles? If not, they should help keep the mast on an even plane side to side to avoid this next time. I'll check a source for the step, but it probably could be welded. Also, I noticed your old post on sails. We are using a...

Thanks for your note - I don't know what he means about vented double lenses either, but I'm to go look and find out. I imagine they are a retrofit that is less expensive than opening portlights. Yes, he has stuff for sale, and I'll try to get a list. There is a good post from March 24th if I recall...

long voyages

I happened to be talking to the former Chrysler chief engineer today about a maintainence question and parts sources, and he mentioned a couple of interesting stories about C-22s. They intentionally put heavy duty hardware on the boat and built it stoutly. They heard from one customer, a doctor and ...

Soft Spot on Deck

I happened to talk to the former Chrysler chief engineer today and ran your problem by him. There is a balsa wood core. He says you can live with some delamination, but a simple repair would be to drill small holes and pump in some catalytic polyester resin. This would be a two part process, making ...

keel trailer

Dear Choyado - I'm going to try and email a photo direct to you of a Catalina 22 fixed keel on a Trail-Rite trailer, which may give you some ideas. You're right, it does sit lower. I believe they are in So. Cal. so you might could check them out in person(714)556-4550. By the way, when we first got ...

Cockpit cover question

I've now had chance to see Hugh Campell of Campbell Manufacturing Co. and show him the pictures of Birch's cover. They orginally manufactured it for Chrysler, who used it as a dealer item for retail sale. It was made with a sail cloth popular at the time, but they would now use Sunbrella, or whateve...

Replacement tillers

Our tiller was deteriorating, and a brother-in-law with a wood shop duplicated it, laminating ash and mahogany. I substituted with a modified wheel barrow handle while it was off, and keep it for a spare. For a small fee, he might be persuaded to create another. It seems that West Marine could order...

C-22 trailer weight

The data plate on my '79 S-3000 says that gross weight for trailer and load should not exceed 3680 lbs. This is with G78-15 C range tires. It has P225/75 Bs on it and the previous owner said that they did well on hour and a half tows at highway speed in summer heat; but they are only rated for 3030 ...

Bimini/cockpit cover

I saw another post about Campbell Manufac. Co. in Dallas on cockpit covers. They are still in business, so I called them, but they are not open today. I plan to go by and see what patterns they have, which might include biminis. Also, I called another canvas shop, and the owner happened to have a C-...

C-22 trailer

For comparison, Trail-Rite Trailers (714)556-4540 make the Catalina 22 trailers, and I talked with them in December when I was searching for a trailer. It looks very similar to the Chrysler trailer, but not quite as heavy. They sell through dealers, but said the suggested retail price for a urethane...

Bimini for Chrysler 22

There was a picture of a really nice bimini setup I noticed 7/25/02 @ the Chrysler Sailing Assoc. website - www.geocities.com/The Tropics/Cabana/3135. I don't know if it is still up, but if not, if you'll give me address I'll scan in a picture I printed. It appears to have three hoops folding on sin...

Real time wind reports

There is an interesting site for sailors at www.iwindsurf.com, if you are not already familiar with it. They have current winds for almost all sailing waters in the country. Recently I was looking at North Texas Lakes and the speeds varied from 11 to 18kts with several degrees of difference. Trailer...

Floatation replacement

Does anyone have a brand name or source for replacing the floatation foam? My guess is that it is ureathane, and sprayed on. A previous owner removed a lot from the starboard transom area to install a boarding ladder, and boat the seems to list slightly to that side. There must be a more economical ...

Wobbles While Sailing....

Sorry to hear of the problem. I understand that C-22s are designed to sail balanced in 10-12mph wind with the main and a headsail, which ours does. I don't think it will do this with just one sail. Also, have you checked whether there is slack in the rudder linkage to the tiller handle? Additionally...
