wheel steering

Has anyone actually abandoned the tiller and installed wheel steering themselves. I can buy the kit for around $ 2000 but am trying to find a graveyard for a used system. On a scale of one to ten , one being easy, how difficult is it ?

I put my main sail in the bath tub and used dishwasher machine soap. Stomped around on it and used a stiff scrub brush. Came out surprisingly whiter and it is the original sail !

Not tacky at all. Good taste ( sort of ). What I did was attach a grab bar to each side so my wife felt safer when I was heeling.

It looks like a really good idea, especially for tight docking where I have to bend over the transom to turn the motor for extra steerage. However, I would like to speak to someone who has actually installed this device. It is one thing to say it is " relatively " easy to install, it is an...

cored hull?

I want to install a depth sounder, the kind that has the transducer inside the hull. The manuel says that this will only work IF the hull is solid fiberglass, not cored. Okay, does anyone know for sure if the 26 has a solid fiberglass hull or is there a core of balsa wood inbetween ?

Possible different approach to gin pole

Another idea on raising the mast. Can I just attach a long pole ( steel or aluminum ) to the forestay pin on the bow deck, and tie the pole to the pupit. The top of the pole would have a block to pass the jib stay and rope through and someone stands on the launch ramp, pulls the mast up while I am i...

depth of keel

Just contemplating about how far you guys let the keel down. My experience is this : most of my sailing, the keel is all the way up. I have not really noticed much difference up or down as to speed. My thought is if it is light wind then with the keel up, there is less drag. However, if the wind pic...

Just a thought on the leaking ports. I used the Butyl stuff and I am absolutely positive that they do not leak. HOWEVER I still get some brown gunk coming out of the bottom of the stern most ports. Just enough to occasionally have to use a mild solvent or cleaner to wipe it off. My theory is this : ...

tape

Just got back from the Toronto Boat Show. I always like visiting the little booths to see new products. Bought some unique *tape*. It is made of silicon and comes in various colours. No glue. When you use it, it sticks to itself. Much better than white plastic tape. Good for the boots on the shrouds...

the hinged doors have an inside latch but when we sleep put a dowel right across the inside through the two handles on the port and starboard sides. Also a long hockey stick shaft on the hatch lip to the roof just in front of the light midships inside so the hatch if fixed and cannot be slid open. T...

I am interested in getting a wireless depth sounder. Here is sort of what I already know. Attach the transducer to the transom. Attach the display where I can read it. wheel steering

I have seen some 26ers with wheel steering but none with an outboard. Question: if I should get wheel steering, do I have to give up my outboard ? I'm not a fan of wheel steering on the Chrysler 26 -- removed mine in 2003 in favor of a tiller, and have never looked back -- but if you're so inclined I have a pedestal w/ engine control levers, wheel, pulleys, quadrant I can probably let go reasonably. There's a local guy interested, and I need ...
