Finished cleaning the winches today. The receipt in the sack they were in said 4/7/1985. The greese stunk from age! As for the bolts - they were in the bottom of the bag as well. Used hex heads. My thought is that with a hex wrench stuck in the top of the bolt, the long end of the wrench contacts th...

I'm planning on getting ready to cut and glass blue styrene for my C-22 tomorrow. Did a test layup on the inexpensive blue insulation sold at Home Depot. It fits the bill! I'm planning two layers with carbon fiber between and then a schedule of 10oz woven mat, 6 oz uni running lengthwise, another 10...

Spring fever in the extreme!

Great news! I drag the ancient cardboard box out that was found inside the C-22 (man, I've got to come up with a name!) and began laying out all the cables. All the wire halyards and standing rigging are here - and in great shape! Thanks to some of your pictures I have been able to identify the hole...

Every boat needs a good winch... or two!

My C-22 came with 2 Barlow 16 winches... off the hull, wrapped in brown paper in the cabin. Don't know if these are original or not. Good news is that the mounting holes appear to match with the bolt holes! Now for the question: What type head should be on the bolt to mount these, and should I use a...

Somehow my boat ended up with 5 boards instead of 4. A couple of the boards are pretty narrow. They don't look like they are split off from other boards because every one is beveled correctly to fit together. Five boards seemed like too much to keep track of so I'm in the process of making an entry ...

Reminds me of my son & I and a Capri 16. Captsized on us. We could get it righted but it went over again every time we tried to get in. Finally got taken in tow. As we headed for shore it began to wallow and went turtle again. Got a line around it and got it up and, finally, to the boat ramp. Af...

My boom finally arrived from Detroit. Took it a mere 4 months. The gooseneck is not compatible but other than that it's great! Been replacing all the plywood storage covers. The varnish was cracking. Cut several new ones and am sanding and refinishing the rest. Also began getting my lines together. ...

The jib sheet was probably a duh question on my part. Makes sense that, split in half, you would need more than 17' per side! Thanks for the input!

Halyards and Tails

It's time to start thinking about rigging. It was in the upper 50's today (but snow tomorrow!). I have the owners manual from the Lizzard site which gives me lengths, but is missing some info: Halyards (2) are 26' 6", but made out of what. Looks like it may be cable and thimbles??? Rope Halyard...

The composite aircraft guys use the Great Stuff expansion foam to fill soft spots in wings, etc. After hard you can carve to shape and glass. This might work where we have soft spots in our upper hull serfaces as well. One huge caveat is to make sure and use sparingly!!! This stuff really does expan...

Thanks, Alan Just a matter of symantics - the freeboard is the heighth from the water to the lowest point of the hull wherein water would come onboard. I've been on ships where the freeboard was 30 - 40 feet, and I haven't actually had my c-22 in the water yet, but I'm guessing our freeboard as clos...

Here in Colorado, It's my wife & I, and she's just a little petite bit of a thing. I'm pretty much thinking I've got to come up with a reliable, safe, repeatable one-manable system.

Yea, well I eny you, Allen. You've got a beautiful part of the country to sail in. Best place to fish is off Point No Point at the change of the tide. Watched a friend pull in a 35 pound king salmon there. Took him a couple hours. Another alternative is to go farther north, into the islands and bott...

I pulled a Capri 16' out of those same Missouri woods years ago. Looked really ugly. Drove it into the nearest town and into the RV car wash. A few bucks of quarters it looked pretty darn good. Ok, I'm new to this style of sailing as well, but my teaching had been that by raising and lowering the swing keel you are also moving the center of sideways pressure fore and aft. This could be used to trim the helm so the pointing remained neutral. Lowering, then would produce more weather helm, a...

C-22 Main Entry Doors

Sailbob and others who have made the door type entry for your boats. Do you have them swing in or out? My first thought was to swing out but then they are into the cockpit every time they are opened. Also, Do you use any self-closing devices so they don't just swing with the roll of the boat? I supp...

All this talk of swing keels nearly falling out had me panicked. Especially since the C22 I picked up had most of the nuts from the brackets laying on the deck on either side of the pin point. Saturday I took my camera and had every intention of taking photos of the corroded mess. Amazingly, the bra...
