Correction, the bearings I had done were not of nylon, but fiberglass and epoxy. He layered the fiber and epoxy in a PVC tube which had the correct inside diameter for the bearing. Let it set. Cut the billet out of the PVC and lathed it to the right shape (I had given him on of the old ones to use a...

I had a similar problem, and I don't know if this will help, but it very well may. When I rebuilt the motor mount and attached my 1996 yamaha 4-stroke, the cowling on top wouldn't make it all the way in, bumping the top, which sounds like the same problem you are having. It was really close to makin...

I replaced my rudder bearings last year when I had to straighten the rudder cheek. We machined them out of nylon. It's held up well so far. What kind of 3D printer is it? A rep-rap machine or something else. The rep-rap are REALLY cool. I have buddy who is doing the research and development of the r...

Dennis, Here is a link to a few pictures of the project when I did it last winter. https://picasaweb.google.com/shoemaker.brett/DropBox?authkey=Gv1sRgCPuRh5KXnPD2xAE#5592226905895601890 I went with powdercoated aluminum and about 20 bolts with 4200... needless to say the thing is pretty much bomb-pr...

Irene

So, with Irene threatening the East Coast, I'd like a little help, or suggestions on how to best prepare for our first hurricane. I keep her in a slip on the Chesapeake in a very well protected area (deep in a winding creek off a protected bay which is surrounded by high ground on 3 sides). But, wit...

Absolutely! I love the maneuverability of our beauties. Last week we took some friends out (they have a Pearson 35 with a wheel). After stopping at a fuel dock for a little extra, we pulled away and cranked on the tiller to turn 180. I saw them exchange a glance which could only be described as equa...

I was recently reading an article in Passagemaker Magazine on electronics installation, by Peter Swanson (very knowledgeable guy, the Technical Editor/Writer Steve D'Antonio is also quite good). Swanson mentioned that the NMEA, National Marine Electronics Association, is affiliated with ABYC as the ...

I've been tumbling this idea around for a while myself. For the very same reasons too. I want the port lazzarette for "quick at hand" items. Plus, I've noticed a slight list to port, the only way I can account for it is having the galley, the head bulkheads and batteries all on the port si...

Absolutely Terrence, there's just something fundamentally counter-intuitive about putting holes in a boat below the waterline. Its something every boat has, but still something I struggle to get my head around. I can't wait to get these things sealed up.

I like that bimini retclt. I'm in a constant internal debate about teak. Any exterior wood on a boat is just that much more work to clean or varnish... but, gosh it just looks so dang pretty.

I'm coming to that conclusion, that I'll have to pull it sooner than later. I was able to seal around it, but wasn't able to properly "bed" the threaded parts. From what I've been researching today I could either pull it and yank the offending pieces and glass it over OR yank it and replac...

Purple Power? The degreaser? I wonder if any degreaser would work similarly. Do you remember if he only used it on the outside? Or inside too? Mine really look like garbage, and I'd love to get them looking cleaner and letting in even light.

Splashed & Delivered, but...

Yesterday was the day... and a beautiful day I might add (mid 60's, sunny, 5-10 kt winds from the NW) perfect timing to finally get the boat splashed and delivered to her new home. All the major winter projects were done (motor rebuild, new motor mount, new throttle and shift cables for the motor, b...

RedCanyon - I got a replacement 5/16 x 2'' bolt and locknut to provide the gripping force on the tiller assembly, around the rudder post. Other than that I was thinking about putting a short bolt through the back of the tiller assembly into the rudder post and securing it that way (right through the...

Alright, so it sounds like there's not too much I can do with the space I've got to work with. But, on the bright side, it sounds like a non-issue so I'll just do some superficial fix that'll put my mind at ease. On another note, I got it all bolted on and sealed in yesterday with better than expect...

Yeah, I'm really happy with how it turned out. The bottom is open, so no more pooling water after the pencil sized drain hole clogs up. I'm on my way to the boat right now to put it on, I'll post some pic's here later tonight of the install and finished product on the boat. Same guy made the nylon r...

Ha, that's funny! Something must've happened to the original, because that's definitely a zinc! But it is all still compression based correct? There are no fasteners that go through the collar and into the post? Sounds like I've just been thinking about this too much.

Tiller Assembly

So, with much excitement and very little fanfare I re-attached the rudder, rudder cheek (fixed, reinforced, welded, straightened) and tiller assembly yesterday. I'd just like to run everything by you guys just to make sure it's been done correctly. As I've noticed in previous threads, much of our ge...

new motor-mount

I just wanted to share with you my excitement about a new piece for my C-26. The old motor mount on the stern was cracked and repaired several times by the p/o. The fiberglass mount wasn't built with the weight of new 4 strokes in mind after all. I was concerned about it all last season, to the poin...

Great stuff, man. This is a project I'm in the middle of as well. If you find the CAD file, that would be great. I'm currently having some difficulty getting the rudder post disassembled. I've got the tiller assembly and collar off, but the mushroom shaped bearing at the top is attached in a way tha...

Yup, that's what I was afraid of. The rudder post isn't bent yet, or it doesn't appear so: http://www.flickr.com/photos/57235663@N05/5276373854/ it looks like the weld broke on both sides and skewed the rudder somehow. I'm not interested in a temporary fix if I've got it up for 3 months and already ...

Hey Guys! It's kinda weird posting my first topic here, after reading 39+ pages of topic posts. I feel like I know so many of you already! My girlfriend and I are proud new owners of a beautiful C-26 named Providence, and we've already had half a season of fun, excitement and terror (2nd time out. n...
