Re: Securing block of wood in mast step
Epoxy in the bottom would be an excellent move. In fact I would waterproof the block of wood with epoxy before I glassed int in.

Re: Gotta replace the broken keel cable
I spent the entire day trying to drop the keel out of that boat. Out of six stainless steel 9/16 bolts holding the pivot pin shoes - one backed out without breaking. Another almost backed out but wrung off halfway up the length of the bolt. Two I immediately wrung the heads off. And two - a previous...

Jason, your full phone number didn’t post. I’m definitely interested because I could use a trailer and a “parts” boat. But the trailer would have to be road worthy for a 100 mile trip back to my home. Please get me your friends contact information. gmgarymi@gmail.com.

Re: Converting onboard to outboard
I just finished closing up the huge opening in the transom and adding a heavy duty adjustable motor bracket. I have a slide show of the entire process I can try to email or text to you. My address is gmgarymi@gmail.com, you’re welcome to contact me.

Re: Gotta replace the broken keel cable
Well I finally managed to get the boat suspended in the air and braced fore and aft. I located and cleared the bolt heads for four of the shoe bolts. Two bolts are still hidden up inside the cast iron shoes. I couldn’t resist trying one of the exposed bolts for tightness. Unfortunately the bolt head...

Re: Gotta replace the broken keel cable
I’ve got the boat in a temporary shed roofed with a tarp. The six posts are pressure treated 4x4s. I’ve installed eyebolts near the tops. I plan on using nylon slings and come-along cable pullers to raise the boat off the trailer and suspend it high enough to drop the keel. Then I’ll add cribbing fo...

Re: Gotta replace the broken keel cable
Thanks! It helps a lot. The keel is next on the agenda. Logically I should have tackled it first before I fixed everything else. But I wasn’t set up yet to support the boat and remove the trailer. I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Re: I’ve fixed the cockpit floor.
I passed some major milestones on the boat this weekend. All the interior structural repairs (floor and ceiling) are finished. I paid special attention to eliminating any hidden screws, sharp corners or edges everywhere including inside the storage lockers. I don’t want any little exploring fingers ...

Re: Easiest cockpit floor fix?
It’s done. Two layers of 1/2” plywood. Fiberglass tape along all four sides. Cockpit screw holes drilled out oversized and filled with thickened West Epoxy. I used a grid pattern of gorilla glue construction adhesive to laminate the double layers in place. I’m going to paint it, no fabric headliner ...

Re: Deck/Hull joints?
Are those spots on both sides above the rear berth area? I’m seeing that the plywood backing strips are rotted inside the overlap joint on my boat. But there’s plenty of white (looks like 5200) adhesive visible along the joints. I’m considering shooting a line of closed cell foam insulation down the...

Re: Easiest cockpit floor fix?
Happy update! I’ve gotten all the bad plywood out from under the bridge deck and the cockpit sole. I rigged up a box fan blowing into the forward hatch and two squirrel cage fans sucking air out of the cockpit porthole openings. This along with a shop vac held against the blade of my plunge saw elim...

Rudder bearings are 60 days out
I’m glad I quit procrastinating and ordered my replacement rudder bearings from Rudder Craft. It will take two months to get them. My C26 renovation will probably drag on for at least that long. When I disassembled my rudder I discovered that the plywood core was rotted in a small accessible area. W...

Re: Frozen in place swing keel!
Yes, I managed to scrape out old oyster shells all along the trunk down both sides. But it’s still clogged up as I start getting near the pivot pin. The trouble is I don’t have much clearance to work because of the boat still being mostly on the trailer. Once I pull the trailer out and firmly suppor...

Re: Changing from Outboard motor to Inboard on 26
After having replaced a partial stringer and the entire rear berth platform, I imagine installing a sail drive would not be that difficult. Rails for the motor mounts and a hole through the bottom of the hull. But what about the fuel tank, exhaust piping, engine wiring, controls? I wouldn’t even con...

Re: Frozen in place swing keel!
Thanks for your input. I’ve got the boat essentially hanging from come along cable pullers attached to the boat shed structure. The plan is to pull the trailer out from underneath the boat. Add redundant cribbing to support the hull as a safety measure and then tackle the keel. I’m dreading this par...

Frozen in place swing keel!
I’m hoping for suggestions on how to loosen up my C26 cast iron swing keel. I’ve got the boat chocked up and suspended above the trailer. The keel is locked in place due to the swollen and expanded cast iron in the general area around the pivot pin. The pendant is discontinued from the hoist because...

Re: My First Sailboat
Good for you! The only negative aspect to having a trailered sailboat is after all the effort required to rig the mast and launch the boat - you will not be happy with a short outing on the water. I confess that my young family was sometimes stuck on the boat longer than they liked. That was decades...

I used soft sand sprinkled over a coat of wet paint followed by a top coat of paint. Nice under bare feet but I have mixed feelings about it. It is difficult to sweep.

Re: Gotta replace the broken keel cable
Great information. I’m going to follow your suggestions. Thanks. I’m ready to barrier coat and paint the hull. I just replaced the plywood platform in the rear berth. Replacing the cockpit floor backing is next. Then comes the dreaded task of dropping the swing keel out of the boat. I need to study ...

Re: Deck/Hull joints?
Good advice. My circumstances dictate getting her river worthy. She’s never going to sea. I don’t anticipate trailering her. I’ve got a short window in time to introduce my grandsons to sailing. I’m blessed with my own dock in a protected canal with direct access to a wide spot in the St. John’s riv...

Yes, I’m subscribed to his channel but I haven’t watched the entire playlist. I’m finding it difficult to decide where to draw the line on this renovation. Deck/Hull joints?
It seems that the standard approach to addressing a leaky hull to deck joint is to remove the toe rail, recaulk the joint and reattach the toe rail. But - has anyone ever considered fiberglassing a continuous tab of fabric over the seam and then reattaching the toe rails? I wonder if that’s a practi...

Re: Easiest cockpit floor fix?
I’m visualizing everything you described. Regarding the fiberglass tab that wraps around and under the three sides of the plywood edges - I assume you cut that away? Did you cut along the top edges at the sides or just the bottom edge of the plywood and leave the sides of the tabs? Cutting this out ...

Re: New year
Happy New Year. It’s actually unseasonably warm here in northeast Florida. I’ve been working on my C26 restoration and getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. That’s normal for spring, summer and fall. But unusual for January. I usually avoid bug repellent and sunscreen because I was raised without them....
