I'd like to add one small touch. It would be appreciated if you would re-size your photos to 640x480 pixels before saving them to your online depository. First because some of us are using dial-up and the smaller pictures load faster. Second because they fit the screen without having to scroll out t...

That's a tricky piece to cut and have it match te changing shape and the changing angles of the hull, but not too hard if you cut a bitoversize and then whittle away until its perfect. A common technique in the wood shop is to get yourself a pack of 3"x5" index cards and a roll of scotch ...

In my totally inexperienced opinion, I would think that losing 6' from the top of the mast would severely under power your boat. I've seen pictures of mikepaddle's tabernacle solution. Way cool! It would get your 16' mast up another 12-18 inches, but I still think you'd be unhappy. As far as your sh...

Nobody is going to be able to tell you anything specific from those pics, but if you go to the top right hand corner of the transom there should be a small plate with the HIN on it. It's embossed so you should still be able to read the number even if it's been painted over. Immediately below it the ...

Old trick my Dad taught me. Go look at the boat with $1000 in $100 bills in your front pocket. After looking the boat over and deciding you really do want it take out the money and offer the PO the cash. Most people will see the green and take it. If he says no and you still want it take out your wa...

I was thinking more like lay it on it's side and fill everything from the deck to the front of the seat and from the ends of the tracks back, leaving just a little well back by the transom for a cooler or battery for the trolling motor.

this stuff ( http://www.uscomposites.com/foam.html ) looks like a better buy... thoughts? My idea going forward is to use plastic bottles, sealed into place using this poured-in foam. So, most of your air space comes from recycled materials, and you have to buy less foam. Is there any reason not to...

I will be interested to hear this because as far as I can see there is NO flotation in my LS-16 at all. I think it would be a really positive step to add some and I have tons of space to do it in. It's going to have to be easily formed and able to deal with the heat of sitting in the sun all the tim...

That's one of the reasons I am so keen on the Shellback. It has gotten very favorable reviews several times in different articles or letters in WoodenBoat. Plus I like the idea of an 11' dink for gunkholing areas the C-22 can't get into. And as written in one of the articles I read, it's just plain ...

I am interested in towing a dinghy also, primarily because I'm not a big fan of inflatables. In Lin and Larry Pardey's Cost Conscious Cruiser they discuss the modifications they have made which essentially have turned their 8' dinghy into their emergency lifeboat. There are two things I especially l...

Cutting fiberglass ... blind

OK, this is what I have discovered. The chainplate on my LS-16 was apparently not sealed very well, if at all. This stainless steel strap goes through the deck and was bolted to a piece of 3/4" plywood. That was then glassed to the inside of the hull. I'm assuming this was done before the deck ...
