Boy, I'm torn...I do really like that painted look also. The light thing just isn't much of a problem. When the kids are in there the hatch is always slid open anyway...or they can turn a light on. Hmmmmmm....

Scott, it's the sliding hatch. It has the translucent fiberglass inserts. It's kind of yellowish and rough looking. I was wondering about just putting a few coats of clear fiberglass resin to allow the lighting to come through but give it a smoother finish. Or maybe a clear high gloss varnish??? Not...

Fiberglass Hatch

What do you do about the clear/yellowish fiberglass on the hatch to spruce it up a bit??? I'd like something smoother and glossier. Can you lightly sand it and apply fiberglass resin? Or is there a better way?

This would be for Iowa, but Lake Red Rock, which is a reservoir has a the following fee (April 15-Oct 15) :
Slip up to 24' ---- $1590.00
Buoy up to 29' ---- $690.00
Dry Dock up to 24' ---- $310.00

$550.00 sounds like a great deal to me. We dry dock for the $310, works quite well for us.

No need for the red pointer on your photo Alan! Gotta love the driveway shuffle. When we have our boat in the driveway we never seem to have the right vehicle in the back on the open side. And congrats Bruce on the 25th! You're a little ahead of us, we just went past our 16th. My high school sweethe...

Scott, looks like we're going to try the Cetol. Sounds like it might hold up a little longer than teak oil and we do like the color. I'm planning on just ordering a quart from West Marine. I'm guessing it's not something that could be picked up at a Lowe's, Menard, Home Depot, etc.

We're keeping ours in a farmers machine shed. He keeps a # of boats and campers in there for the winter. He charges $35/month. So basically$180-210 for the off season. Maybe you could find something like that around there. But I think your right for one season probably won't hurt too much.

Great pics of each of the boats! I've got most of the wood sanded down. I'm excited to get them oiled and see the difference I'm seeing in the pics from you guys. I'm bringing the boat to indoor storage for the winter on Friday but I'm keeping all the wood at the house so I can apply a bunch of coat...

Excellent info! Looks like standard teak oil is the color we were after. Do you normally do the tiller in teak oil also? Previous owner of our boat had it varnished. For the cleaner I used West Marine one step teak cleaner/brightner. Worked alright I think, just didn't know what to expect. I'm sandi...

Teak Wood

This should be pretty quick easy one to answer. I bought gold teak oil for our boat, but my wife is thinking she would sooner a darker color like walnut. Does standard teak oil finish the wood dark? Also, I've cleaned/brightened the teak so far but the wood is still grayish. Should I sand everything...

Last year we were out in a boat about the same size, a Newport Sandshark. Like you said, a great day of sailing, came to an end with one of the side stays breaking and the mast landing in the water. Got towed back by a couple of drunk guys on a pontoon boat. 1st thing they did even before throwing m...

C20 vs O'Day222

We sailed for our last time of the season today :( Great way to finish up the season with 15-18mph winds and a beautiful 74 degree day in Iowa...in October, not bad:) Enjoyed having a O'Day 222 follow behind us for about an hour or so. We neither gained nor lost ground and we had 4 adults and 7 kids...

Like Bruce we have the C20. We pull with a 2005 Toyota Sienna. No problems pulling, braking, etc. We've pulled up to 200 miles at 65-70 and got 17mpg. You can kinda tell it's back there but not much. Seems the C22 should have a bigger vehicle though.

Thanks for the the website on the painting!

Boat comes out from the marina this weekend to get started on the projects.

Anyone on how to replace the lines going to the rudder?

I didn't see how to "fish" the line through the rudder without pulling the pin on it. Is that correct?

Need to replace the ropes going through the hull to the rudder.
How do they connect on the rudder and what's involved in changing them out?

OK...now that we are done or close to done with sailing for our first season, I'm starting to plan the off season updates. Looking for some input. Great Day to Sail in Iowa!

Great winds in the midwest today. After my first two outtings with 5-10mph winds finally got my 20+ winds today. 15-30% heeling was good fun and boat really is quite fast. Handled the choppy white caps no sweat. And a great evening sky to boot! Here's some pics of our C-20: http://s1180.photobucket....

Smart thinking on the daughter's boyfriend invite. Sounds like it works out good for both of you. I believe the manual says mast can be raised by 1 or 2 people. I'd have a chiropractor's appointment already scheduled for the following day if I tried to do it myself. LOL

Good point on the Chrysler New Yorker. In fact I should have thought of that. My teen years we had a 1977 Chrysler New Yorker w/ a 440 (unfortunately no horsepower in the late 70's models). It was longer than the C20 and it road like a boat. Funny how we liken the ride of boat to a car and a car to ...

Oh, and regards to the 40mph winds and 4-6' waves. We have the 40mph winds in Iowa, quite certain though Lake Red Rock has never seen the like of a 4-6' wave. When we have 2' waves though they're really choppy! Look forward to stronger winds.

There's really 2 positions that you can put the tongue extension out. We launched one time with it in its furthest out position with the back tires of the van approx 2' from the water and the other time with it in its middle position and the back tires were in the water. Granted when we retrieved th...
