Re: Motor down, rudder up
Well it is a sailboat, full power is more like 80 to 100 amps. I have never run it that high you are just pushing water at that point. I can run it at about 4 mph which is a good clip for my boat @ I think it was about 40 or 50 amps. mostly I run it at 2 mph that's 10 amps. I use cheap menards Exide...

Re: Motor down, rudder up
By the way, I can unbolt the lower unit with the four lower bolts and replace it if I need to. The fixed part never needs to come out.

Re: Motor down, rudder up
I welded an aluminum plate to the lower unit. This is sealed from the platform in the post above. Also it is sealed around the lower unit itself with butyl tape for sealing windshields. I have never had a leak.

Re: Motor down, rudder up
Electric drive 1.jpg Sail Drive platform.jpg I have an electric drive, I used a 9.9 lower unit and mated it to the hull just aft of the keel. the prop wash goes over the rudder so steering is very good. the lower unit sits behind and above the keel so it is well protected. I would never go back to ...

Re: Motor down, rudder up
Sail drive mounted.jpg You can lower the rudder about 8 to 2 inches and it will be about level with the keel. You can also tip the motor up and clear the rudder. This is if you are skimming the bottom. how often are you going to be in that shallow of water? How fast do you expect to go? If the moto...

Re: Motor down, rudder up
Do not put the rudder all the way up. Just high enough that it is higher than the keel. Also you can at the same time leave the motor ricked up also. Steer with the rudder not the motor. If you are so shallow that the rudder will hit all the way down you should not be going very fast.

Re: What bodies of water do you sail?
Not Lake Michigan, but I was out on Lake Sakakawea in ND the largest man made reservoir in the US. I was sailing in light winds when within 30 min it went from 5 to 45 to well over 50. I was going into the wind tacking back and forth. When the wind came up I tried to tuck into a bay and reduce the s...

Re: Missing mast on my 18’
Do you have sails? Find out how long the mast is supposed to be, then look at the online boat wrecking yards for something similar sails to match. A mast is a mast, they are not that hard to make work. Look at your turnbuckle and also look for something that will mate up to it or they make stepping ...

Re: What bodies of water do you sail?
I started to read his blog, good stuff. this is the best so far: "As soon as we wake up we bring the gasoline cans in dinghy to fill them, the sailing ships that are supposed to leave from the first hour of the day are still at anchor and inactive, strange. The weather is not too bad but far fr...

Re: What bodies of water do you sail?
I plan on making some modifications also. I am going to put the shrouds on new chain plates attached to the outside of the hull and go one size larger on the shrouds. I already have an electric inboard and closed up the outboard motor well. I may also do some bracing on the tunnel for the swing keel.

No but I would like to. I know of a couple of 26's that go to the Bahamas. I would take mine there without even thinking. Solid boat!

My New mast support
I made a new mast support for my 26. I was going to screw the flange in but once I had the straps attached it is so solid I do not have to. I think I am going to put a inside piece in also so that I can raise it up another 3' for raising the mast. Next project is to finish the solar panel supports. ...

If you go to an auto parts store that caters to body shops they have a drill attachment that will take it off without chemicals. Or use acetone, aliphatic naptha, methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, isopropyl alcohol and other solvents.

Re: Water Issues
If it is coming from the aft stern area then it most likely is the motor mount area, this is a problem area for the 26. The chain locker is under the forstay forward. This has a drain that goes out the front and if it gets plugged the water sits there and eventually finds its way down. I closed off ...

Re: Water Issues
You want to plumb it so it goes in the basin, in the top of the basin. That way you can see when it pumps. There are not many fixed keel 26's so it will be hard to see any common problems. If the water was coming over the bow, it could be a leak in the chain locker.

Re: Water Issues
Why aren't you installing a bilge pump? There should be room behind the ladder. I just cut a nice size hole in the floor. Buy a really small pump with a float, plumb it to the sink so that it drains into the sink basin so you know when it is running.

Re: Leaky swing keel trunk
Check the tube that the cable runs through. Sometimes people just put a garden hose on it. Your best bet is to take the table support off and check it out. I have heard that the trunk itself is not very stout, although I have no problems with mine.
