There is always a great deal of bustle around her; There is usually a gang of men around her; She has a waist and stays; Her rigging cost's more than her hull; It takes a lot of paint to keep her looking good; It is not the initial expense that breaks you, It's the upkeep; She can be all decked out;...

Why a Ship is Called a She

We always call a ship a "she" and not without a reason; For she displays a well-shaped knee regardless of the season. She scorns the man whose heart is faint and doesn't show him pity; And like a girl she needs the paint to keep her looking pretty. For love she'll brace the ocean vast, be ...

It's a wise decision to not go beyond the capabilities of captain, crew or equipment.

I was always told: There are old sailors and bold sailors, but not many old, bold sailors.

One nice thing about a masthead topping lift vs. clipping it to a backstay: At the dock I tie the boom to the side of the boat away from the dock. It keeps it out of the way and snugging up the main sheet keeps it from swaying. I use the tail of main halyard, run to the cockpit and through rope clut...

Good job, Scott!

I have always restored old cars and the occasional old boat. I tell people: You see what it is, I see what it could be.

Nice to know I'm not the only one with the gift/affliction.

If I did install cockpit speakers I was planning to enclose the back side with either wood boxes or stainless steel bowls. Mostly for safety, in case a wave hit and breaks out the speaker cone, leaving me with a 6" hole in the cockpit. Secondarily, it stops out of phase sound waves from going i...

I also use that Shakespeare band seperator. It seems to work just fine.

I originally planned cockpit speakers but found they aren't necessary. I suppose they might be nice if you have someone in the cabin a lot while you're underway, but that's not an issue for me.

On the '79 and '80 C26 there are no translucent sections in the hatches. That looks like the factory non-skid pattern.

I really like the two tone look with the gray non-skid.

Magical 5200 Removal Tool!

I'm rebedding all my deck hardware this spring. Among other things, the PO had run beads of 5200 along the teak trim strips on the cabin. I spent about 45 minutes scraping with a knife and got about 3 feet done, then I got smart. I put a scraper attachment on my multi-tool and 5200 came off at the r...

John, they are still on Ebay for $70, basically half price. That's what got me going. They were purchased by a boat builder and then liquidated. Exhaust fan only, no fancy packaging, brand new Nicro Day/Night Vents.

Yes, adding the solar day/night exhaust vent to the head. I figured that's the best place for an exhaust vent. ;-)

On my '79 C26 the factory waterline and boot stripe were still there, in the gelcoat, when I sanded off the old bottom paint.

However, being in fresh water, I ended up moving the line up about halfway to where the first owner had it.

I think most of us with C26's have 9.9hp motors, usually with a big, low pitch prop. The stock motor mount generally won't let you tilt a newer four stroke outboard, the power heads are bigger than the old two strokes. Some here have done really nice rebuilds of the motor mount to keep it stock look...

White oak is hard to find around here. I used mahogony from Menards. Look closely, some of their boards are glued together, but you can find the ones that are a solid piece. ;-)
