Inspection of the rudder and rudder post

Post by RGS »

I purchased a C-22 a few months ago and thought I would make sure the rudder and related hardware are in shape for the coming season. I do not want to haul her and am wondering if it would be a problem taking the rudder and rudder post out for inspection by just sliding it out and reinserting it with the aid of messenger lines to assist in getting the control lines back through the hull and into the cockpit?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer in helping me get my boat squared away.

I haven't tried this. I put mine in while the boat was on its trailer. My guess is that this might prove hard to do simply because the center of weight is not under the rudder post, but aft of that. From a messanger line this would make the assembly so it hangs in a manner that the post would not be in alignment witht he tube. Once started it may pull back in, but getting it lined up for the start would be the challenge.

Just thinkin' out loud

Everything Paul said is true, it's quite an awkward balance of weight once it clears the hull. Having done this on the hard, I can say it would be quite a challenge without taking a swim. In addition, the oxidation of the aluminum made it quite difficult for me to get the bronze collar off.
