Replacing Rudder "Lower" Line

Postby Minnow » Tue Aug 26, 2014 6:32 pm

This summer, we purchased a 1976 Chrysler C22. She is showing her age, but we've had a great time learning to sail.

Until the rudder down rope snapped in half.

I did a little swimming, and I was able to locate the hole on the top of the rudder blade. Thanks to whoever posted this diagram: http://chryslersailing.lizards.net/imag ... r_post.gif
And this one:

Maybe this is a very simple thing, but I can't seem to figure out how to attach the rope. I could shove the rope in the hole, but I suspect that there's a way to tie a knot or something?

Can I fix this in the water? I'm not ready to haul her out yet--summer is too short here in Michigan.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Ah, the part you can't see is behind the cheek plates.. the vertical hole in the end of the rudder intersects with a horizontal one. You run the line in the end hole and out the side, then tie a knot and pull the knot into the horizontal hole.

You'd have to remove the rudder from between the plates..
