Blade rudder for C26

Post by darmah »

Strange hydrodynamics of swing up rudder lead me to believe the boat would handle and relieve steering effort better with a blade type. Has anyone changed out to something along this line. At least the present one with cutout for motor shaft will have to be rebounded and sealed. It was constructed of purely marine plywood and sealed.

Hey darmah, did you buy Deb's Toy II ? a 1978 C26 that used to ply Lake Travis under that name with a blue rudder? If so that's not the standard rudder, which is a blade rudder.

In a way, yes it is the same boat, it was storm damaged, hauled up on shore with a fractured tabernacle and dis-masted. My brother bought it at auction as an insurance salvage and having been a long time stink boat operator is now turning to sail power. He just finished a bareboat with friends in the Antilles and is smitten.

Cool. Yes the original type rudder is a blade, and yours was an experiment by the owner I think. If I can find the link to the thread here I'll post it.

A pic of the original type is here

Jeff knows his C-26s better than anyone -- This is a great link - but now dead ...

Updated link to all the essentials we need to keep our rudders in shape --

I am still looking for a better solution that the "radiator hose" that keeps the rudder post from flooding the boat -- seems like a catastrophe waiting to happen -- anyone have another solution... since I am contemplating wheel steering - I may go to a shaft seal like they use for prop shafts...
