How do I check Swing Keel Pin?

Post by Sailroy »

Hi,
I recieved some feedback about the swing keel pin.
Does anyone know an easy way to check the condition and what do I look for?
I have been sailing a 16' Com-Pac Yacht for years.

Is the boat in the water or on a trailer now? If it is in the water and there is no water in the cabin, then the pin and brackets are intact... at least for now. If it's on a trailer then you might try to put it in the water, if possible for a few hours, even if just tied to a dock at the ramp. The keel pin brackets are in the keel trunk pocket under the boat, so fairly hard to inspect. Water would intrude into the boat from either side of the keel trunk which is located just aft of the mast compression post. There is a large black rubber plug about 6 inches in diameter on the starboard side to access the pin and on the port side open the compartment under the forward settee.

Keel Pin Question Roy

Post by Sailroy »

Hi,
The boat right now is on a trailer, there is also two rusted metal fittings inside the compartment on the port side. I'm thinking this is for a sink?
Boat acutally looks in decent shape some spider cracks in gel-coat but over all seems fairly solid.
Wondering about the two metal fittings where they lead too.
Cheers Roy
Hi the rusted metal fittings are in the port side small compartment.
What are they for,, A Sink? and where do they go?
Cheers Roy

The lower one right above the hull is the keel pin and the one above it is a spring and plunger to help reduce keel movement.

Welcome Roy!

Here's links to some picts of the keel pin and plunger. I believe that's what your referring to also.

You can see in the picts that water was leaking past them. To inspect the keel pin, the only way is to pull it out. The keel pin and bracket issue is well documented in other post that Capt Scott or Alan will stear you towards...

I am very curious about these pictures, as I am in the middle of these repairs right now. Is there somewhere else I could see the spring & plunger?? I'm set with the keel. Cheers!
