Starwind 22 Keel movement

Post by Fpellegrini »

I want to inspect this as well as I can pre-season. Does anyone here have experience, pics, anything to help with the Starwind 22? I have a bit of shimmy, and it makes it tough to sleep on the boat with the banging. I have read that a little shimmy on some boats is intentional with a swing keel, while on others it is a serious danger sign. Help?

Assuming your keel is similar to a C22 I'd be looking closely at the keel pin brackets. Make dang sure they are in good order and if you can see any part of the keel pin check for corrosion there too.

I would expect SOME movement in the keel at times. Especially since these boats are getting pretty long in the tooth and need some updating.

If all looks good and the movement bothers you, maybe some nylon bushings are in order.

Maybe you can raise the keel for sleep at nights? Bring it up snug to the hull?

I do not believe some movement is cause for extreme alarm however it might give you good reason to look things over carefully!
