Fenders rubbing through paint.

For the second season in a row, my fenders have scoured their way through my pretty blue paint. Note, there is direct dock contact, just the fenders, wind and waves. Touch up isn't hard, but it seems like this shouldn't be happening.

Is this normal, and just more noticeable with my blue paint over white gelcoat? The boat is tied to a dock all summer.

Could my old, beat up fenders be contributing to the problem? Would new fenders help? Would fender covers help?

Is there some trick to tieing up to avoid this?

Tom- I'm too much of a noob to know, but my sailing buddy has been doing it for years and he has terrycloth (towel) covers for his fenders. White Easypoxy on the freeboards, never seen any rub through though.

I'm having the same issue on the Cal 21 with the single part Interlux. Its very 'soft' and since the layers are sooo thin any scrape or bump goes right thru to the gelcoat..

this is why I am considering going to redo the boat with gel coat more expensive but I have seen others with the same problem.

Actually since we have a Poker Run next weekend I'm going over tomorrow with mason jar of spare paint and foam brushes in hand.. I just hate to see a boat look badly painted and missing coverage in places....also will be finishing the cabin top lines led aft on EE !! Just have to add the cam cleats behind the winches..

It's the downside of using a one part paint, the upside is it is easier to apply and repair.

Yep, showed up at the boat with a single foam brush, bit of wet/dry sandpaper, and the spare blue paint, scuffed it up a bit, dabbed paint on the missing places, tipped it out and it is all pretty again...for now..
