Rub Rail Repair

Post by desert sailor »

Hi, all;

I have a '70s LS16. I was going to install a new rub rail to make it look nicer. Most of the kits I looked at on-line seem to snap over the edge to hold the piece in place. When I started to remove the rail on my boat it appears that the hull and topside are two pieces with a flange at the joint and the rail is somehow stapled through the flange to hold everything together. Does this sound right? Does anyone know how to fix/replace the rub rail? Are rub rails even available anywhere? If I don't replace it and just try to clean it up I would need the aluminum cover that fits over the rail at the stern, port and starboard. Does anyone have a used part I could buy?

Thanks.

Greg

Tried to post some pictures of the rub rail and side of the hull. Message says the file is too large. I don't know how to download them here. Suggestions?

Greg,

To keep our server storage cost low, we enforce a 512KB limit for image attachments. Most cameras these days have a default setting of 1MB, so if trying to take something directly off your camera and post here, you're likely going to hit that limit. There are a ton of free photo editors online which are very easy to use. An easy to use website for basic resizing is http://www.simpleimageresizer.com.

I uploaded a 1MB file, chose the 'make image 50% smaller' and got back the file as 258KB.
Full Disclaimer -- Chryslersailors.com is not associated with that web site, and advise you carefully read their privacy policy before uploading files to it. Some of these sites make money obviously through advertisements, but also take ownership of your image for possible sale to stock photo houses.

Also, keep in mind you don't have to attach the file, but attaching is preferred since the image file stays on our server. If the image is already on a website, get the image address and paste into your message using the BBCode [img] image tag ---here's some info on that under our FAQ. Keep in mind that direct linking to another server could cause the image to fail if that server is down. You can see that on lots of early postings where the image is referenced to 'shutterbug.com' website and the links are broken because the user account is gone.

I have a late 1960's LS-13 with he same issue. I have located a custom source for extruding a replacement rub rail (ExactSeal in Indianapolis), and the preliminary estimate is around $5/foot. However, they have minimum of 100 feet, and we all need something just less than 35 feet. If we can find a third person, we should all be able to get to for $175 or less.

I have a late 1960's LS-13 with he same issue. The rail has a slot that accommodates the ridge and is attached using silicone sealant. I have not been able to find a stock source for this rub rail. However, I have located a custom source for extruding a replacement rub rail which is a half oval shape with a slot (ExactSeal in Indianapolis), and the cost is $8/foot plus a $125 set up fee. However, they have minimum of 100 feet, and we all need something just less than 35 feet. If we can find a third person to participate, it will cost just over $300 each.
