Advice on buying used outboard

Hello list,
I could really use some advice from you Chrysler fans. I have a C22
that I sail on the Black Sea, in Romania. I am now looking for a
decent outboard motor for entering/leaving harbor, etc.

I am searching for a used, since new ones are over my budget at this
point. What size should I be looking at? Is 6-10 hp optimal for this
size boat? And what brand would you recommend? I know this is often
a personal choice, but I would be curious what kind of engines you
guys have? Maybe you had a particular good/bad experience with an
engine that you want to share. Is it true that older engines
(70's-80's) are sometimes a better deal than newer ones?

Thanks,
stefan

Here's my thoughts:

A 22 foot boat would only require a 4 or 5 hp motor to reach hull speed. Anymore would be overkill, imho.

Good luck finding one. And I'm having problems finding one in Ft. Myers, FL, which has more boat registrations than many places have cars. I'm feeling a bit more fortunate.

The Chrysler 22's original "optional" equipment included a Chrysler 6Hp Sail model outboard. It was a long shaft. A 5hp motor should work ok as well. I'd recomend a long shaft over a short shaft. I personally prefer an 8hp extra long shaft on my Chrysler 22 as there are some serious currents to contend with where I sail from time to time. Also the 8 doesn't have to work too hard.
