Chrysler 280 question

I have an older 280 that works just fine but I'm having trouble getting
the oil plugs to seal up correctly. What did Chrysler originally use on
those to seal those plugs ?

Not sure, I don't think my 280 has anything on those ( you mean the lower unit fill and drain plugs, right?)
But I do know who does know, and that is Franz Buddenberg at Franz Marine !

My 280 has a plastic type washer, I think you can get them just about any outboard parts place.
I have the same size plugs/washers on the lower unit of my 74 Evenrude 25hp.

I have a couple on order from franzmarine.com. They were $2.65, each so
not very expensive. Thanks for the info.

Franz is a Chrysler dealer from "back in the day". Even once owned a C22 when he sold them at his dealership, although I think he would tell you he prefers power boats..

A complete brain trust when it comes to Chrysler outboards.

washers here already, now, what oil to use

Franz marine really turned my order around fast.
Now that I have the right seals, what type of oil should
I use ( lower unit ) ? There aren't a lot of marine
dealers around here and the auto parts stores seem to
have varying opinions on what to use.

To be honest, I just use whatever lower unit lube is on the shelf at WalMart. Hopefully you'll get a better reply than that..

I went by EE to do some work this week and there was a bare spot of grass just below her 280 lower unit. Guess what - I need a seal for mine as well..

You may want to check wal*mart or a fleet/farm type of place for lower unit oil.
I also suggest that you get a pump. The lower unit on our 280 takes over a quart of oil, and if you don't get it full you may run the needle bearing that is just under the water pump dry and could score the drive shaft (been there).
The oil pump is nice because the hose will screw right into the lower drain hole and you just pump until the oil start coming out the top plug hole.

I have a suction plunger. It's rather like a grease gun in size but has a
simple plunger on the bottom and a fitting on the top so can fit various
tubes and adapters onto it. It's great when you are refilling things like
the rear end on a pickup or a transfer case and such. I made an adaptor
that lets me thread it into the bottom plug hole on the lower end housing.
