HELP!!! C-22 Swing keel repair

I am a new member of the forum and have a question for the group. I recently purchased a 1975 C-22 with a swing keel. The previous owner informed me that the boat had a slight leak in the keel pocket.........this has turned out to be a slight understatement!! Water comes in like a fire hose (I'm exaggerating to make my point)! The boat can not be sailed as is, it looks great but doesn't float. I'm looking for someone who has experience in removing the keel and repairing the keel pocket. Need some advice on the construction of this area. I have a large shop and all the necesssary tools, but trying to decide if it is worth the time. Thank you. Andy

Stand by, you should get answers from a number of the C22 guys, several have worked this area over. Decaying keel pin brackets usually are the culprit.

Welcome to the forum andyhoyt!

I happen to know someone who has done this repair! ME! LOL!
This repair is not for the faint of heart. However it is NOT rocket science either. Just a LOT of work.

I have a breif tutoral covering the repair I did on one of my C22's.

You will see 4 photos. The bottom right photo is a link to the keel pin repair I did.

Once I had the old brackets out I took them to a local marine machine shop and had new ones made.

Please remember the keel itself weighs in at 800 lbs! be very careful! Also hang tight as several members here have done the same work. You will get more ideas from other folks how to accomplish the same task! Pick one that works for you and go for it!

I did mine as well - single handed. At first it was intimidating but turned out not to be that hard. These guys used a more straight forward approach than I did so run with their advice. My challenge was putting it back in and aligning everything. Since I was by myself I put a flashlight inside the boat pointing into the pin hole and then got under the boat and moved the keel until the light shined through its hole to the other side. Pin went right in.

Another tip that I sound very useful when putting the Cal21 keel back. Draw lines radiating from the hole on the keel outward. I did different colors for above, below,bowside, and sternside of the hole. But that required me to climb in and out of boat while lining up.

I like the flashlight better, should let you align it without climbing in and out to look at the pretty lines.

I only helped a little on Captain Scott's Keel job. From my point of view it was a lot easier then it looks. After all Captain Scott did all the background work, had the parts made, dove in full force head on to tackle the job, no looking back. I showed up took some photo's. Tossed in my $.02 from time to time and had a wonderful time. No seriously I had a really good time helping on this job.

Along with all the good tips tricks and advice the Chrysler Brain Trust has on the subject. I will toss in one more bit of advise. And here it is.

Anyone live close to Andy. KEEL PARTY at Andy's house, WOOO HOO. Seriously Andy, lets get some folks to pitch in.

Hey Sailors! I think I found a great thread for all the info I'll need. I too intend to drop my keel and do some needed repair on the Coreth. I'm guessing that the keel pin bracket is the original(1977) & seems very corroded. I was getting a steady drip from it. She's now on stands at my place, under a trailer port. I don't know what questions to ask, as of yet, but will have some soon. I'm going to continue reading now. Just want to say Thanks in advance
