considering buying this C22

Hello all! I found 77' C22 on craigslist, the listing price was too good to pass up, so I went and checked it out. It's in great condition, the only concern is the rudder. the original weld broke, so the current owner did his own repairs with a few bolts, and it has never been in the water since the repairs were done. I would like some opinions on if this is going to be a reliable fix, or if i'm going to lose the rudder the first time I put her in the water. Also the spreaders have been replaced and moved about 2 inches up from their original position, and the keel has a considerable amount of rust, winch to raise and lower it look somewhat rusted, but the current owner who sailed it the past 19 years said it still works great. Please let me know your thoughts, I appreciate any feedback!

for the price probably worth a risk. Bolts can be as strong as welds. Rust on the solid cast metal swing keel should be OK.

I Would jump. Make sure to check the sails. Moving the spreaders an inch shouldn't make too much of a change. For that price though I would go through everything with a fine tooth comb. Make sure running rigging and sails are actually good still.

I checked all the sails, no mildew or signs of tearing, no patches and very clean. All of the rigging appears to still be in good condition as well. So worst case scenario I would think I'd be able to make my money back on the sails alone, right? Not that I'd want to just scrap it but if it turns out there is something catastropichally wrong with it I wouldn't be wasting my money. He said that there is also leakage in heavy rain around the entrance Into the cabin, has anyone else seen this issue? I also have concerns about the trailer, it hasn't moved in 5 years, and before that it only ever moved about 20 miles twice a year, and I'm trying to pull this about 200 miles, any thoughts?

the leakage around the cabin boards is typical. I solved mine by putting thin rubber weather stripping (Ace Hardware) on the bottom of each board (especially the bottom one). I also put the rubber weather stripping inside the metal channels on the sides of entrance the boards fit into. You might have to shave a little wood off the top edge of the top board.

The boat looks good. On the trailer, check the tires for dry rot. Don't take a chance. You can buy tires mounted on galvanized rims for around 80.00 at Wal Mart. Use one of the old ones as a spare. While you're at WM buy LED light kit for about 50.00 and a can of grease to repack the bearings. Check for rust at critical points, springs, hangers, bunk attachments and especially where the spindle goes into the axle. there's nothing but a rollback to remedy a failure there.

You didn't mention the motor. Nothing to fear there as long as there isn't a piston hanging out the side of the block. They're easy to work on and boats.net has online parts breakdowns and reasonably priced parts. I'd recommend putting in a new water pump. Only trick with that is getting the fins gong the right way when you install the impeller.

Good luck.

Unfortunately I couldn't pull the trigger on this one. It was the right boat just the wrong time. I didn't have any place to immediately store it, and there are a few issues on my truck that needed to be fixed before I would feel comfortable pulling that beast. Looks like someone else got a heck of a deal though! Guess my little Chrsyler Pirateer will have to suffice for now. I will definitely reach back out when I come across another one, thanks for all the help here guys and gals!
