New Sailor with C22...Need Your Help

Ahoy Chrysler Sailors! Started out as a powerboater, but got the sailing bug a couple of years ago and I am now almost completely obsessed! So far my sailing experiences have been solo aboard a Capri 14.2, but I am now eager to move up to sailing the C22. I am also new to working on boats, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the little bit that I have done so far. Got my C22 off Craigslist from a non-profit group in Sandusky, OH that had used it as a teaching vessel. Trailered it home, cleaned, compounded, waxed, stepped the mast, all good.... But while lowering the mast the last few feet, too much stress on the hook and it ripped the plate right off the deck. I attempted to repair it, but was not happy with the results, so ended up removing the whole wood block and fiberglass around it. I am asking for your advice on making this repair, including what type of wood block I should use and where to get it. Also, I want to say how much I already appreciate this forum! I have done a great deal of reading on here and I have been impressed with all the information that has been shared, but much more impressed with the helpfulness, respect, and good nature that the members here interact with. Case in point, I am currently in the process of building a stand/cradle for my C22. Patterning it after astrorad's. Messaged him and he got back with me offering help. Some photos are (hopefully) attached because I know how much you like them! One is the boat right after I got it home, another after clean up and mast stepping, and one of where my mast support block used to be! Any advice you can give me is greatly appreciated! Thanks and I am looking forward to sailing my Chrysler!

Brian,

Congrats on the new Sandpiper! The mast on C22's is very robust for its category of daysailor. I can imagine generated a few curse words when it snapped off. Were you using the factory documented procedure with gin pole and bridles to mast and demast? The 'hook' arrangement is not ideal and I've heard of folks saying how it comes disengaged sometimes, or creates a bind. I replaced mine long ago during my restoration phase with a hinge. That way I know it stays connected. I realize doesn't help much now, but when you do get the mast altar repaired, I would definitely use a hinge arrangement. As for wood type, etc...what do you see already used by the factory? I'd go with whatever species of wood the factory used. Possibly could use some plastic like a block of UHMW Polyethylene, but wood be better for glassing around it.

Thanks! And yes, there was some foul language used! I was indeed using the factory procedure to step and unstep, and it worked just fine until the hook got in that bind the last couple feet going down. I have already purchased a hinge that will replace the hook as recommended. I do like the idea of staying with wood for the support block. I can't identify the species of wood that was used before, but I do have some pieces of it and maybe I can get someone more knowledgeable to identify what type of wood it is. Thanks for the response and ideas!

This happened to me as well on my C26. All the wood below the step was rotted. I own a sign shop and I had my CNC router tech rout the replacements for the wood out of green acrylic. Acrylic is hard, you can taps treads into it and it will never rot. If you have a local sign shop that has a CNC Router they can cut one for you. Or just ask if you can get some scraps and cut your own on a table saw. You'll probably need 1/2" thick. If you can't find somebody let me know and we can work something out. I would avoid wood at all costs. Acrylic also glasses over very well. I'll see if I can post some pics.

Here is the link to some pictures. I didn't get any pictures yet of the finish product with gel coat. It turned out great though and I've been sailing it the last 3 weekends. https://photos.app.goo.gl/2qZyxPGsciWcuhyz7

Thanks for the response Wespslim and for posting the pictures! And appreciate your offer to help. Acrylic is a very interesting option... I will definitely be checking into it. Enjoyed the photos of your work and I would love to see the finished product when you get a chance to post. Glad your repair worked out so well and that you are sailing!
