Safety Tip:
Sailing at night can be dangerous. Especially if you are not familiar with the required lighting on boats! Around here seeing a tug and tow is very common place. Even at night. If you see another vessel coming and attempt to pass astern, if you are not familiar with the lights you could find yourself in a heap of trouble! In Vancouver BC a 40' sloop with 14 people aboard attempted to just that. It saw a large boat coming and attempted to pass astern of the larger vessel. The owner of the sloop did not know his lights. He drove his sloop right into the tow line of a barge. The sloop was capsized and there was loss of life.

It is very important to be able to recognize the various vessels at night.

B) Sailboat with motor running.

As always great question Scott I have seen power boats trying to out run a barge in the dark I wish I could see their face when they hear the water. Around here most push.

Hey how about the question. When under sail power and you motor is off, it's night time. Is it okay to run you steamer light too, with yout red green and stern white light?

If you do, you are assumed to be a power boat and must act accordingly. You no longer have the priviliges of a sailboat.
