Adapting OMC motor to Chrysler control

I replaced my broken Chrysler Sailor 280 with a Johnson Sailmaster 9.9 but I'm still using the Chrysler control and cables. Here's how:

First, I found an OMC remote kit on Ebay. This was an easy coversion and comes with excellent instructions.

I took the "Chrysler" ends off the cables and made new ends for the cables using 10-32 threaded brass standoffs from McMaster Carr. All it took was cross drilling them for the clevis pins the Johnson uses and bit of hand grinding to make them the right thickness to fit in the clevis pin "yokes".

I hooked it up yesterday and everything works. Throttle is full travel, shifter works. I used a bit of Rescue Tape on the cable to make a tight fit where the Johnson holds the cable casing. The only change is that now pulling back the lever puts us in forward and pushing forward puts us in reverse.

BTW, I never liked having to reach back to the motor for the stop button, so the old Chrysler stop button now resides in the cockpit under the start button.

That pulling back the lever puts us in forward and pushing forward puts us in reverse could mess up the Capt. Morgan pose until you get used to it.

Probably won't be a problem the first few times while I'm really thinking about it. It's after I get confident I'll have to look out.

Tom,

I finally am getting around to putting on my new to me outboard. I am removing the original Chrysler control and noticed something that might work if your control is the same. The throttle cable on mine is in the center. The shift cable above it. The shift cable can be moved to the bottom by removing one nut putting the lever to the bottom and reinstalling the nut there is a place to attach the cable at the bottom and top. This would reverse the way the shift control moves so pushing forward woud shift to forward. Let me know if pictures would help.

I was thinking of looking into that this weekend. I don't know if mine has that capability but I was thinking it might be adaptable.

If yours can't be switched let me know. Once I have my new control in place and working I will be getting rid of the chrysler control. My new control is a little bigger in the cockpit but has a key start and choke.

I looked this weekend and my control can be switched around, so I'll probably do that next weekend.

Man, Tom and Cathy,

The photos of your boat and motor are so clean and pretty, every time. I feel kind of ghetto, with my photos and how my boat looks compared to yours. Seriously, really nice work you do on your boat.
