quick question about leaking keel trunk

Post by amayotte »

If there is water coming through the winch cable hole, what could a person do if you are in the middle of the lake and the bilge can't keep up.
Hasn't happened but I was thinking last night that of all things that could sink her that siliconed fitting would do it if it came loose.

A previous post had a fellow with leak from or near the through hull fitting for the winch cable, but I an not certain how it was resolved.

Carry a cork the correct size to plug the hole.

If this is a serious concern, you should have aboard a regular conical ( sp? ) cork or piece of wood you can shove into each through hole you have aboard. Any good marine shop like larger west marine will have them.

Also, if you have a catastrophic hull failure or through hull failure you can wrap your sails around under the boat to partially plug the holes. This is of coarse extremely temporary.

We carry the hole plugs for Destiny however since Lady Jo is positively buoyant and we only day sail her I do not carry them on her.
