C-26 Fuel Tank Recommendations?

Post by tgentry »

I recently bought a used Johnson 6 gal tank with gauge, but found it impossible to fit through the opening, so I'm back to the original Chrysler tank.

We also tried a cheap no-name plastic tank last year (it came with our dinghy motor) but fuel softened the cap threads to the point it would no longer go on properly.

Can anyone recommend a 6 gal tank with gauge that works well in a C-26?

Tom I have an Atwood tank like they sell at Wal-mart it just fits through lazzarette and rotate so I put it in empty and fill it with another tank and my fuel hose or a 5 gal. and a funnel (big funnel).

I have have a Nissan 3 gal tank in the starboard side lazarette and an old metal Nissan 6 gal that fits in chocks I built setting directly under the lazarette seat. Its a bit of a tight fit but it works well.

I just have the 6 gallon tank that came with the boat. A plastic no name, no fuel gauge red tank. Attwood I think.

My tank goes in and out okay on my C-22 but it is a little obnoxious to put it in full of fuel. At Half a tank of fuel it is much easier. I typically do like lecker68, I put the tank in place first, then fill it with two 3 gallon plastic cans that have there own fill spot attached, that open and close with a trigger handle. Works great no spills.

The cool part too about the two small 3 gallon cans is they fit in the fuel locker with the 6 gallon main fuel tank. The lets me take 12 total gallons of fuel if I ever wanted to stow more for a long sailing trip with fuel to spare if the wind failed me.

Thanks
Alan

Also the Attwood 6 gallon for me. I can get it in and out of there with fuel in it, but its a bit of a struggle. Usually also fill mine from a 2nd can, but if the fuel gets old I do remove the whole tank and take it home for the weedeater and lawnmower.

No gauge but I haven't needed to motor far in the last few years...

Thanks guys, I'll look for the Atwood. I also like the idea of carrying a couple 3 gallon cans to fill it with, especially if I fit everything back there.

If we manage to do our Florida Keys and Dry Tortugas trip this winter we may want some extra capacity "just in case".

Once upon a time I used a OEM chrysler OB metal 6 gal tank.. just shoehorned in... but.. it was heavy and it rusted bad -- dangerously so.. ( from the bottom..) I would never reccomend putting a metal gas can in a closed (wet!) lazerette. I purchased a brand new -- real nice -- suzuki metal tank but will not use it.. I now use a cheapo plastic 3-gal tank and am wondering what to use for more fuel... I will try the attwood 6 gal.. there is so much weight back there in the stern.. the fuel, the tank,, the ob, the battery , the crew...

I installed a 12 gallon tank under the cockpit of my Venture. Its been there for 10 years with no problems. I installed a combination fill vent cap I purchased from West Marine. I put 6 gallons in at the beginning of the season and have left over in the fall. These tanks come in various sizes, 12 , 13, 14, 15, and configurations. You can also add a gauge. I will install one in my C26 .

No worries about where to stow spare tanks for a long trip. No trying to fill a portable tank jammed in the lazzerette. Filling a portable tank onboard is not a good idea.

The tank I got is a Moeller I bought at Overtons.
