PS:
This tale is best read to the tune of the Gilligan's Island theme song, as the actual sailing was about a three hour tour!

PPS:
Also picked up a cocktail table on the free pile at a local garage sale the next day

Sorry to hear about the misfortune whilst out on the lake! Fortunately no major damage to anything, but your pride. The definition of sailing is "countless hours of tedious boredom, interspersed with moments of STARK TERROR!". We have had similar conditions here lately and it makes for great sailing. Last weekend it was blowing over 20kts here, as we were heading back to the marina, I was flaking the mainsail while my girlfriend was steering. She could not keep the boat pointed into the wind without a serious amount of throttle on the 9.9, and almost got too close to the rock jetty. The wind is your friend and your enemy some days...

Great story and well written! I could almost see my self there with you!

I'm very glad that no one was hurt other than maybe some pride! As far as the non sailors go, they are helplessly lost. Don't bother trying to convert them! LOL! I have a bro that will do anything for me if I would just take him sailing and another bro that could care less about sailing! He was on my boat for the first time in YEARS two weeks ago! Why? Sailing? Nope, to go crabbing! LOL!

We all learn from each other, the good and the exciting! Keep the stories coming!

Thanks for sharing!

Glad to hear everything turned out OK. A good reminder why I always error on the side of extra h.p. in my outboards.

I say AMEN to that! The last guy that owned my boat used it in Lake Michigan and stuck a 15hp on her. I thought that was a bit much since the manual calls for 6hp, but maybe not. I never want to put myself in that situation again, that's for sure!

We learn by doing, sometimes failing, hopefully doing better the next time. When I raced 19' lightnings we had no motor tall, you'd by surprised how little motor you need as you learn to maneuver the boat under sail. Bet the whiner asks to go again once he realizes what fun he had :)

Outstanding tale, Bruce!! Thanks for sharing, felt like I was right there with you.

You are very skilled at story-telling. Please keep them coming! Don't think anyone minds reading these--especially with the cold coming on!

Thanks again for sharing!!!

Iv'e always heard that the difference between an ordeal and an adventure is attitude. Sounds like you had an adventure to me. The great thing about making mistakes is that, generally speaking, you only make that one once. Although I'm the poster boy for breaking that rule.

Bruce,

You never learn anything when you do it perfect the first time. Docking is one of the most exciting/stressful/challenging exercises you will do on your boat. Now you know what it feels/looks like to do it wrong, and you will be able to quickly recognize a bad docking situation.

And oh, yeah, I KNOW what a bad docking situation looks/feels like too, except that I am a slow learner.

My C-20 came with a 5hp 4strok ( extra long shaft ) witch works fine. I latter got a new 4hp 4strok (long shaft) wich did not work will. You must get an "extra long shaft outboard". Wish you could have stoped by, I would have sent you off with a 9.9 extra long saft Forse out bord to see what I meen. A 9.9 2strok an a 5hp 4stroke weigh about the same. But when you need a power boat , you will have one. A sail boat under sail, is a sail boat. A sail boat under power is, a power boat. Most importen thing is that you get an extra long shaft out bord.
