My sheet to tiller steering attempts

Post by jsa »

Here are two videos I made yesterday (12/31/16) showing how I have been working on setting up sheet to tiller steering on the 22. I've been reading up on it and watching lots of videos and tried to put it into practice yesterday in relatively light winds.

The boat did really well downwind and sailed nearly the length of the lake unassisted. Upwind was a little trickier. It took a little longer to find the right balance, but once I did she sailed for over 30 minutes unassisted. I believe she would have kept on going as long as the wind remained constant.

Before I got the upwind groove tuned in, she did tack on me once. There was one gust that made the boat head up quickly and the momentum carried it through to a tack. I didn't have enough bungee secured to prevent it. So, I'd say it does require some monitoring.

Advice, comments, and questions are welcomed. Has anyone else experimented/perfected this?
