Thank you for all the sage advice
Thank you for all the sage advice
I have been lurking on this board for a couple of months. Soaking up all the collective knowledge. I have to thank you all. We (Dad, brothers, and I) rigged and launched my "new" C22, Galatea, without a hitch.
The launch went well. And then it was a comedy after that. The outboard which had previously been very reliable, failed. That's okay, we are on a sailboat. Right. Wrong. The head that connects the tiller to the rudder cracked. Kind of hard to sail without a tiller. In the end, the marina came and towed us in. Now the broken part is at a machine shop to be replicated and hopefully we will be sailing by Memorial weekend.
Thanks again!

Actually it was a Mercury 2 stroke and my brother is cursing it as I type. He had given it a tune up and was quite confident that we were "good to go". Ran great in the barrel. To his credit, the boat had sat in the water for 4 years, untouched. Old gas in the tank, rotten fuel lines, etc. He believes the carb is fouled again. It will start but not run consistantly. We'll see.
But given the neglect this boat had in recent years I expect a few more unexpected happenings. I bought it at an auction that my parent's sail club was having to benefit breast cancer treatment. You had to see past the stuff growing on the deck, the foot of water in the cabin, and the unknown state of the bottom, to see the diamond in the rough. It is amazing what $12 in quarters at the car wash, some bleach, and a little elbow grease will reveal.
My family is looking forward to exploring the local lake and I'm looking forward to teaching my nieces and nephew to sail. Even Dad, who was quite skeptical, is looking forward to having a boat closer to home that he can take out.

Well she looks great in the pic, and that's a great story !
I have a little 5hp "Mercury 45" that we used to push EE with for a time, and now use as a backup to the Sailor 280. Never lets me down. Pic is here.

Thanks for the compliment, Alan. It is amazing what was revealed under all the crud. It was a family affair. Dad helped me rewire and replace the running rigging. Think he was very afraid when I called and asked which should be the ground and which was power and how do I use this tester thingie. When I called back later, Mom said he was on his way.
One brother helped clean the sails and cabin cushions. The other brother helped do the heavy cleaning and tuned up the motor.
My sister and I named her ~ Galatea. Galatea was a Greek goddess of calm seas and the name of Pygmalian's sculpture of the ideal woman. Thought it was appropriate because I bought her at an auction to fund breast cancer treatment for needy women.
I am exceedingly impatient to be out on the water. I didn't realize how much I missed sailing until I got this boat. Keeping my fingers crossed that the various parts needed will be here this week.
Happy Sailing!

Another lurker outta the closet! Cool and welcome!! I have a first launch story too...
Hopefully with buying the boat for a good cause your karma will change... Being patient is something sailing has taught me tons about so good luck with that also!
Keep us updated on your adventures and take picts!
