Overhaul... pulling chain plants.

Chain plate removal, you can tell by the discoloration around the eyes that this is one of the many sources of leakage in this old girl.





When I get around to reinstalling them my plan is to cut a slot out of the bulkhead and change this two part chain plate into one.



You can see in this pic that the po left me a goody, he wired in some house plugs, making working the forward section much easier.





My plans to reinforce the chain plants will not go so far as to bolt them completly through the boat, but a less intrusive manner of rebolting them to the banquette.

I have to deal with my c-26 chainplates but have been confused about what to do... I think you solution of th banquettes seems to be the less intrusive and so appeals to me too.

I'm slowly going through the whole boat, so it may be some time before the chain plates are reinstalled. If you want to get an idea of what I have in mind, check out Jeff's c26 Windward page. I'm going to do a little variation on his theme by adding a small inspection hatch so I can use bolts not screws.

I would think that what worked will for over 30 years would be OK. Just re bead them. Do what you can to get the boat in the water, the boat will be a lot easyer to get in an out of. An on good days you can go sailing. On bad days you can work on the boat.

I appreciate your sentiment of wanting to get me into the water as quickly as possible, but an overhaul worthy of the name I feel can not be rushed. We don't get much snow here in Wilmington, but the temperature drops into the 20's at times. Today for example the wind-chill is 11 with wind gust at 23.8 mph. Perhaps good sailing weather for some,but for a good old southern boy... not Also not a good combination for re-beading hardware. A new splash time will come and again I wish no slight, but it will be on the timetable that reality has slotted unto me.

I was afraid of re-doing my chainplates too but it turned out not to be so bad.
And I too did not want to bolt through the hull but the more people I talked to said it was definitely the strongest and it turned out to be the least labor intensive.
