I tried searching this topic with no success, so hear goes. . .My tiller to rudder post casting is cracked(see pic). I would assume that given its' rather weak design (although if someone hadn't over torqued the pinch bolt it would still be serviceable) some others may have had this happen and can give me some idea as how to go about repairing or replacing it.

I've been told that it can't be welded because of the magnesium content of this alloy, although it looks like is was welded before, hmmm. Having a block of aluminum c&c'd would cost in the range of $400. I'm told!

What are your thoughts or experiences?

If it was mine I would first attempt to braze the crack with some aluminum brazing rod and then see how it holds up. otherwise I would weld up a mild steel replacement. Of course if you go that route you could just as easily have it made in stainless.

Had the exact same problem with Catch 22. I sent it to work with a neighbor that does welding for an aircraft maintenance facility. He tig welded the piece back and it has been in service with no problems ever since. I also considered inserting a smaller diameter piece into the top of the rudder shaft, welding it in, stepping it down to a size I could get a comercialy available tiller head for. Not cheep but doable. Here are some sites where they can be found.

I guess I'll try the welding route, but it's good to know you can buy a part that will do the job - but at what a price!

I had good luck taking parts from the boat to a local machine shop and have them duplicate the piece with SS.
