Trailer Winch replacement

So we hauled out the Annemarie this week, other than a little monkeying around all went well. however we did snap the trailer winch cable. (after unraveling the cable, it was very clear that it was shot) I have the original trailer winch and in lieu of replacing just the cable i was thinking about replacing the whole winch with a newer type strap. So here i am looking at bass pro shops trailer winches, reasonably priced but which one is the right one? you have everything from 600-lb , 1200-lb, 1400-lb etc. I want to be safe but i do not need "over kill" how do you determine which is the right capacity? any help would be appreciated. thanks.

I can not say which is the right one but I can say don't get the cheapest. I bought a perfectly suited one from harbor freight and it is nothing but problems. Does it work? Sure. Is it adequate, I suppose it is.
However it is very frustrating when the ratcheting piece jams up. Cheaply built means bending parts and heartburn.

This is a one time purchase that you will risk a lot on. Get it right the first time!

I made the mistake. It will not happen again for me.

Ok so I went to the marina this morning and lo and behold it says 1200 right on the winch... So Imadumbass question answered. The manufacturer is actually still around so I figure I'll go with the same but in 1400 lbs !

I got a 2500 lb. winch and strap from Overton's and I'm very happy with it.
