I have a Mercury Bigfoot 9.9 hp w/power tilt and will have to enlarge the stern opening for the power head to tilt into. That being said; I don't see any problems with enlarging the opening (very thick fiberglas). I had to reinforce the exsisting mount to hold the extra weight of the motor and tilt unit. My plan is once the opening is enlarged, is, to reinforce the opening with Stainless steel angle running around the inside of the opening and connecting it to the existing reinforced mount with a strap running from the top of the opening to the outer corners (both left and right sides) at the top of the mount creating a triangle (this will give more strength to the mount). To trim the opening I'm going to use wood or starboard shaped to the approrate style bolted through the hull mat'l into the stainless brackets.
I have a few, new to posting pic. so here is my first try

I am looking at a Chrysler 9.9 but no elect. start so my 3 alternatives are
1) Mount an outboard bracket which will raise and move out so it can tilt
2) Rebuild the mount on the back of the hull
3) get an engine like a old 9.9 2 stroke 70's vintage Johnson or Evinrude which has a low profile cowl but as old as they would be they might not be dependable and most were short shaft. also if you had power head problems
you would be right back here with option 1 or 2. I think short term to go with option 1 and reinforce hull mount and find and modify a used mount
or make one from scratch to fit but I don't want to miss sailing weather.

Dave,
Interesting mod. I was focused on enlarging the hole in the transom but putting the motor farther back might have the same net effect while being a bit easier. Thanks for the idea.

Tom I am cautious on enlarging the hole as you would lose the support on the top of the opening and might lose some structural strength.
