Just a quick update,

took my keel in to get sandblasted and sealed, i will be picking it up today. cost $150.00 (does this seem like alot?)

if it is a nice job, i will post pics, if not...then i won't

now i have to struggle to get it back in the boat....i am dreading this....


any pointers???

Seems to me that sandblasting and sealing for $150 is a good deal.

I figure sanding and painting my keel to date has been at least $40 in goods and then add hours of my labor. I'll be doing it again this year as my keel is not sealed and the rust pops through. I'm betting some of the autobody folks will have a better answer but I would be way ahead of the game if I had done what your doing now.

P.S. Just an odd thought, Would it be posible to power coat a Keel? Would it last over time, assuming no impacts, just normal wear and tear.

I'm with Banshi I'm going to use Por 15 on my keel. I've been useing it for years in my restoration business and think it would be the best long term repair.

Do you guys plan to coat over the POR 15 with anything, like epoxy, etc? Or do you think the POR 15 is an adequate outer surface?

I followed the treatment process specified with the por 15 then used their primer and went with the same 2 part epoxy I used on the bottom of the boat....

I'm going to paint over the Por15 , I know this sounds odd but when i'm snorkeling I like the under water view of the keel and want to paint it with something even if its just for me. (remember I paint custom cars)

I've had Por 15 on the bottom of my car for 11 yrs now and to go that long with out playing with a 900 lb chunk of lead and steel seems like a good way to go. I don't plan on having more then $100 into it when done with lots of Por 15 left over for another project.

Never heard of POR 15 before. Sounds good, from the web site. Looks like something new to add to my to-do list. Thanks Banshi and MarioG.
