Saw this on PBS last night, building and sailing a replica Egyptian vessel, was really interesting !

I watched the show and it was really interesting how they carved each massive planks of the hull like a sculptured jigsaw puzzle. I was surprised to see how well it sailed once the sails were raise. After watching them in the process of raising the sails I figured they were going to turtle the boat/ship. They kept dipping the square rigged sails first on one side and then the other at a very rapid rate. Then once they got the sails up and running with the wind they were stable.

I liked the captains comment when he first looked at the boat. "It looks like a really big salad bowl, a very pretty carved salad bowl. I'm a little afraid of sailing it."

It was very cool to see it actually work, and work well. Now that was good TV.

I wached the show and not impressed. oh the way the Egyptians built there ships is a marvel but that they took them apart and moved them 90 miles seems nuts , If they were smart they should have set up a marina and charged per foot for wet slips , they might still be around then...lol

I was amazed at the ropes lasting 4500 yrs and I have to replace some that I know are a few years old.
