Fraying Spreader

I'm getting ready to step my mast on a 1979 Chrysler 26, and I noticed that one of my spreaders is "fraying" where the shroud passes through. Any ideas how to repair? Replace?
You might just need a spreader boot. mine had that slight fuzzy look , I'm sure its neoprin and a little sanding should smoth it out.
Pictures would help, I find that on these 30+ yr old boats (&cars) that alot gets changed over the years and most rpacments on the boats are up-grade or better quality.
This would be the time to check your spreader bolt, I would at-least make sure the spreader base is firm against the mast.
