Can't get the engine to turn over. Does anyone have a photo or diagram of the wireing on the ignition switch? Also how does the gear shift lever function in starting the engine? Thanks guys.

Hard to say. Yes, there should be a neutral switch on the motor that prevents the motor from starting unless you are in neutral, and that is connected to the remote controls. That could be it.

But as far as the switch diagram it depends on the individual motor and the switch - let us know if it is the original Chrysler Sailor outboard, and the original Chrysler remote/switch ? Or has it been changed by a previous owner over the years ?

9EE had a remote and switch when we got her, but it was for some other motor that was on the boat in the past, and it had switch positions for tilt, and choke, and things I couldn't use, so I had to modify things.)

If you have a Sailor 280 there should be a push to start button on the motor itself, and the neutral switch is over by the starter.

Yes original Chrysler motor and controle. You are saying the switch is on the motor itself? At this point I would disconect to test if I can figure it out. The motor was starting if lever was giggeled around so this could be it. Not sure if this is a 280 but will check for start button and switch. Thanks again will post some photos at some point. Boat is quite original and in very good condition. Just cleaning and getting the bugs out from non use.

Assuming it hasn't been removed, the push to start button on the 280 is right by the fuel connection.

The neutral switch on the 280 (if you are facing the front of the motor) is to the left side of the motor head between the carb and the starter. It's a cam/lever that depresses a button to close the starter circuit when the engine is in neutral.

A bit touchy on the adjustment in my experience.

I lost the key start fuction during re-wiring
Now my 280 will only start with the starter button on the motor.
Which is fine since we usally need to lower the motor anyhow or handle the choke when it's cold.

Found the starter button and the neutral switch on my engine. The neautral switch was already disconected/bypassed and wirered together. Hit the starer button on the engine and got nothing. Must not have any juice going to engine. I have electric in the rest of the boat so the battery must be charged. Time for Jim the fix it man . By the way this engine does have a charging system for the battery?

Well the old story of check the simple things first is good here. Put a fully charged battery in the boat and turned right over!! The other battery gave me lights for the boat but must not have had enough power to turn over the engine. Strange. Turned over fine the time before no start then nothing. No slow turn or even a click. Question again. Is there a charging system on this engine? Thanks for the input!!
