Rudder line replacement---Help

Post by Traveler »

Hi All,

Anyone replaced the rudder line (to raise and lower rudder) while the
boat is still in the water? It is a C22 and I searched for forum discussions about it but came up short. I can take it up on a trailer but would prefer to do it while it floats. Any suggestions on what line to use? Thanks.

My only experience is with a C26 rudder and if the C22 rudder lines are ran in a similar fashion using your trailer seems in my humble opinuon the only way to go.

I can't think of how you could do it without using snorkling or scuba equipment.

I had problems getting the lines through the rudder tube and I was kneeling under the boat on the trailer.

I think just maybe if I go stand on the very bow of your C22, you could just maybe reach down under . . .. . . .

Oh, never mind!!

My wife says I have to go on a diet anyway . . . . .

Hey Scott,

Maybe I'll get in touch when it's time to clean the bottom. If you get up, way up, on the bow......

Drop the rudder out the bottom while the boat is in 3 or 4 feet of water. I've done it twice and once on purpose! Change your lines and then tape a 3 foot stick to them. Slide this up the rudder through Hull from under neath while a helper in the boat grabs it and pulls it up retrieving the lines. While he is slowly pulling up, insert the rudder shaft into the throughhull and secure with the locking collar above. Watch your fingers!

Now there's an idea! I'd have not thought of simply doing it in shallow water! Nice idea! ( accidental or not! ) LOL!!!

Wouldn't it be easier to leave the rudder post in place and unbolt the rudder at the pivot bolt? This way you don't have to align the post assy. and you could do it in even more shallow water. You would still use the stick method mentioned before. Just a thought.

My rudder fit tightly in the rudder cheek and I preferred to rassle with it above the water. Besides the rudder post is an easy slide into the through Hull.

you know there has to be one wise guy when tide is not full high run it on a sand bar and have some blocks for the hull and some food for lunch while waiting.
