Thought I would start a new post since the "plasteak" one ended up with threaded inserts.



attached are a few photos of the mast step that was redone with the inserts. I first drilled down and deep into the step and filled with epoxy...it soaked up lots, I wanted to make sure it was solid and that the epoxy went into the deck, not just into the block on top of the deck, since im not really sure how they built it in the first place.



After that set I drilled in for the inserts, covered everything in blue tape and the screws with teflon tape, filled the holes with epoxy and inserted the inserts and screws. had some overflow (was expecting that) and done. The screws came out nice and easy.



The nextday I removed by cutting throught the tape with a knife. I will doing the same with the hatch slide/hand rail combo.

Oh yeah, I'm liking that a lot!! Now where did you get the inserts? Stainless?

I'm thinking of running a jumper off one of these somehow so I can run a cable down to the keel (lightning protection).

The inserts are stainless and they came from a friend who has a machine shop in PA, however they are available on line from lots of places, these type were for embedment in epoxy.

Thanks for the photos and the write-up, some may think my overhaul is progressing way to slow, such is life in my case... oh well. There is however a silver lining to every dark cloud. I get to benefit from the improvements and upgrades others have done along the way.

If I remember correctly, the originals were wood screws that were about 1-3/4" to 2" and the new screws are 1/4"x20x2".

Alan, as for the "next guy" it's only a joke, one of my friends keeps commenting on my "improvement projects" and the duration. He keeps telling me to hurry up and make it nice for the next guy... ie, the old it's good enough, stop obsessing. I really enjoy working on the C22. I truly hope the day doesn't come where I have to give up the C22, but if it does I hope it's because threre is a bigger sailboat taking her place!

Thanks for the thread insert idea! I'm going to be redoing some things on my deck, and I like this a lot!

Thanx for the link Tom...I only found Fastco Fasteners and they seem to be a supplier for manufacturers...wholesale...don't know if they do home DIYer's.
