The topic of Portlights has be done very well here before.
However, during my first fall project, I find myself working on these all but fun "windows".
I came across a enigma, if you will.
My major question here is as follows:
How many of our boats have the portlight screws on the xterior?

I noticed while looking at an old post (no judgement here Alan) that Alan's
fasteners are on the outside of his boat. viewtopic.php?t=2757&highlight=windows
Mine, on the other hand are not. I remember than neither of my other small sailboats in the past had them on the exterior either. A compact 16 and a catalina capri.

Now for the opinion, take it as you may, I feel like there is no way possible that a manufacturer could make this "mistake." I cannot see a time where this would be an advantage. It seems to be 6-8 more leak points to me.
I'm trying to find reason why they could be reversed to moreso prevent leakage.

Yep, same on EE and the project boat, screws on the outside

Screws are on the outside of my 1975 C22...they do not go through to the inner hull liner and do not attach to or hold the inner trim. The inner trim is held in place by rivets.

My 1979 C-26 is like Bill's

As well on mine, 78 C26.

They changed the C26 portlight style from 78 to 79. If I have my druthers, I like the 79 style.

.. on the outside here, 26 of them per side in the main cabin ports alone. I used a roofing seal tape in between the window and hull and ran the screws right through it this spring. Worked great. S-27

The screws on my 1980 C26 are on the outside, I like what Bill did to his C22 did away with the frame altogether. At the moment I lack the courage and the skill to go that route... the deadlights on the 1980 model are just so big.

I dont have rivets on mine either.
I was just curious.

I would love to hear from someone if they remove their portlights soon, to see if they are able to "flip" them to put the screws inward.
I will post some pics of mine to compare and contrast to everyone's

Screws on outside of my '79 26 and I'm certain they have not been touched before I got the boat.

And... I'm the oddball. '78 C22 and the screws are on the inside of the boat. But then, I found it abandoned and apparently mid-restoration. The keel brackets, for instance, were clean and like new, but not sealed and the bolts were not tightened (glad I checked it before plopping it into the lake).

PortLights

Yup, screws on the outside. Clearly my windows had been done by some prior owner but there were no screw holes on the face of the inside of my port lights. Assumption only is they have always been on the outside. However the screws on the inside do make more seance. Owe well, my keep the water out now so they will be staying obn the outside for at least a few more years, but I do like the idea of them being on the inside.
