Rare VHF Communication
So I had to work tonight.
Took a nice guy sailing on Lady Jo.
There are three markers where I sail about a half mile apart making for a perfect triangle to sail around. Blowing 15, gusting to 30, way over powering our solo sail, the main.
But enough of that . . . . . .
We are sailing along and the VHF pipes up, "Lady Jo, Lady Jo, Lady Jo, this is {the other boat name here}.
So I responded approriately. We switched to channel 71 and re-established contact.
"Lady Jo, you are currently sailing over the top of a submarine that wishes to surface . . . . . . We don't want to hit or surprise you" , We responded appropriately with, "Yes, THAT would surprise us! Thanks for the heads up!" OMG! So we of course changed our point of sail to clear the area!
OK, it was a private sub. A small sub, not a trident but still, THAT was a first for me! LOL!
OK, it is SOOO past my bed time,
Chat in the am!

Under sail, right of way. My vote.
However I would scoot out of the way as fast as possible just to be on the safe side. A sub could be real hard on the bottom paint.
Thanks
Alan

Ha, funny, of all the studies and tests I've taken, I do not remember any submarine questions!
Hmm, lets see, me,
I don't even know he is there, +1
I'm sailing, no motor running, +1
Him,
Clearly under power, -1
He knew I was there, -1
Chase boat flying an internation dive flag, +1
but as a sub, is he truley covered by dive rules? Don't know.
Does he have restricted manuverabilty? I do not believe so as the water was plenty deep. He was not in a market channel,no tether, etc.
I'm thinking I might actually have the right of way. I really do not know. However, when the hail came in, it was all we wanted to do. Get out of the way! . . . . .well, and see the sub surface! LOL!
It will be a memorable moment and as I get older I'm sure the sub will get bigger!
