self-tacking jib

The 1977 C22 price list in the documents file has one of these critters listed as a factory option. Has anyone ever seen or heard of one on an actual boat? I know they have their drawbacks...loss of sail area, loss of the slot, reduced performance off the wind, etc. On the other hand, a none-too-agile 70-year old solo sailor is always looking for an edge. The lack of a real cabin trunk would seem to be a plus in mounting the track, although the front hatch may be a problem. Any thoughts?
