I have been looking at the pictures left by Guillaume C.

and been trying to figure out how he attached the wood to the hull of the boat.

From what I can see he used some fiberglass to hold it in place but from what I know of fiberglass, which isn't much, you need to sand away the gel coat first before the new stuff will stick. It looks as though he glassed to the gel coat and wood. Does that work? Or am I seeing it wrong?

Yes I glassed to gelcoat(sanded to 80 grits). Gelcoat is mainly resin, a bit modified tough, so I believe it should adhere enough for the purpose, but If I were doing structural work I would sand down to fiberglass.

Cool, that makes life a lot easier not having to sand down everything.
How strong do you think it is doing it your way?
I guess obliviously strong enough hey or you wouldn't do it.

So then after glassing it, that's when you sanded it and painted over?
how many layers of fiberglass did you use?
how much touches the wood and the boat...2 inches each (making it 4 inch wide strips)?

I used 3&4 inch wide strip of 6 and 10oz roving, one layer on each side. Seem to hold fine. But I am not expert by any mean, I suggest you look for other sources to confirm or infirm that just sanding the gelcoat is enough.
