I am starting my canvas work and been searching ebay and craigs list for old heavy duty machine with metal gears. Most of what i find is straight stitch.
What is everyone else using?

I use a 1961 Singer 503A.
Works on my RC sailboat sails With some care and seams to work fine on my main sail cover. The old thread is shot and its coming apart. I have restiched some of it and it works great!
Especially since I can now reverse it!

I bought a Singer 401 Slant O Matic on Ebay for $241, including shipping. I got it to make a cover for my boat.
I got some Sunbrella end pieces to make a tarp to cover my boat.

Hi folks...30 yrs ago my sister gave me an old beat up Necchi she purchased for $5 at a basement sail. I've done car seats, leather, jeans, etc. Heavy and bombproof.
My recommondations are to get the heaviest portable you can find, straight stitch, zig zag is nice but not essential. Keep it oiled with fine oil, and don't force it.
