Nice job Hopper! Looks like you have the original Fiddle block and swivel base. Mine was missing when I purchased Sea'chele. Instead, the guy rigged it with a single large block and a smaller block on a line attached between the trunk support struts. I have since added a swivel cam cleat base, but w...

Joe,

I have both those plates as well. The serial tag on the transom with s/n 430301181 on it and the model plate in the back of the cockpit, but no indication of date of build.

Where was the date located on yours?

Hopper, You have a Hull ID which makes it easy to determine the year of manufacture. Mine only has a serial number, so there is no way to tell unless someone can dig out a master serial number list from the Chrysler archives. Anyway, sounds like you had to do a lot of work on the trunk. What type an...

Is there anyway to figure out just how old this boat is? (Year of manufacture?)
I haven't been able to figure that out either, but if there is no Hull ID then it was built before 1973. Mine just has a serial number and no HID.

Joe, When I have it out at the lake for the weekend I just have it beached and bail it out if it rains before I use it. If I leave it at the lake I put a tarp on it. My Father-in-law had made a nice PVC tent-like frame for our patio set when we cover it over the winter and it fits perfectly over the...

I took a wrong turn and hit bottom in shallow water the last weekend I was out. I was going between 3 and 5 knots at the time when we hit. The trunk was torquing back and forth as we dragged along and I thought it was going to snap off. Didn't think fast enough to pull the center board up! To...

Yeah, I posted about the mini-bailer . That will probably be an after-season upgrade for me. For now I'm using a gallon jug with the bottom cut out. If you have a swivel base with cam cleat already, but only a single block, I found a Harken fiddle block with becket that will work great for the mains...

That's a steal for $100! I paid $750 for my boat and trailer. I wish i had the white top/red bottom option because the red top surface on mine can get hot to the touch when in the sun for a while. I don't have a bow cleat either, so yours must have been aftermarket. The deck plates sure make it easy...

GPS for small boat sailors

I just ordered a Garmin ForeTrex 101 from Amazon for $101.53.

Image

It might not have all the bells and whistles, but it has what I need and the great thing is that it is waterproof and straps right on my wrist.

I figured I'll make my first post in this thread, since I just purchased a Man-O-War last week. I'll post a photo or two when I get to the computer that has them. Haven't actually had it in the water yet, had a couple minor things to "fix" first. Perhaps next week I'll get the time. Welco...

Re: Faded finish

Hey gang, I tried to compound the finish on the Manowar with so so results.I guess thats what 41 year old fiberglass is gonna look like. I don't know if I should try waxing it next as I don't want to be slipping off the side into the drink. Also a shot of the homemade mast with its 1st coat of spar...

Yeah, at $4 or higher per gallon it's not only expensive to run the boats, but also to drive to the lake in the car. Especially hauling a boat. I think it cost me about $120 in gas for the trip. I can't believe my in-laws drive up there every other weekend!

Joe, nice to see you got your avatar out there! Well, I went with my plan and it worked well. I can always move the pin if needed, but with it attached to the center board I can attach it from either side. Sailing was great this weekend. It was nice getting back out there. According to the GPS I max...

Great weekend up in northern Wisconsin. I had the lake almost all to myself. Mostly just people fishing. I saw no PWCs or waterskiers, mostly becasue the water was still pretty frigid. We had mid 70's on Saturday and low 60's on Sunday. Nice south wind both days, but Sunday was better for sailing.

Joe, I don't think you will have a problem buffing, but I know the non-skid texture they molded into the deck is not conducive to sanding. Good luck, I hope it turns out. on a side note, I just remembered this morning that I had one more repair to do on mine before heading up north Friday. Not a rea...

Self-bailer for C-15 Man-o-war

Joe, et al manowar owners, If your old circular shaped self-bailer is broken and you really want to replace it, I found one that should work real nice. Its an Andersen mini bailer. EE, Yes, lot's of fun they are! I think I told you this already, but my 5-year old (at the time) was scared to death when I took him out the first time and has not gone back yet. My wife was even scared and has not tried again. The 5-year old vowed to give it another shot this year. I might try that...

Well it sounds like a very successful first run. I want to get a hold of one of my friends' waterproof GPS handhelds for the weekend to see how fast I can get mine going. I know it can really fly, but I am a poor judge of determining knots. I hope I have some good weather. It's supposed to be in the...

Yes, as you can see in the picture below, I have a deck plate near where I need to put the rub rail. However, there seams to be something in the way and it will be very difficult to hold the nuts to bolt in place. I'm going to go the screw route. I think I have about a 3/16 inch thickness there. The...

Thanks EE. There is some spidering of the gel coat in areas, but overall I think it is in pretty good shape for the age and rough use. I did remove some pop rivets from the middle of the area I am putting the rub rail in. They were holding on the old tiller stay that must have broken years ago. I wa...

You're right. I was thinking of a Butterfly, which is 12' 2" actually, so even that now would need to be registered! The lower limit used to be 14 feet.

That's a great idea, except I jumped the gun and bought some stainless flathead sheet metal screws.

I'll see if I have some rivets at home that are are long enough. I can always use the screws on something else.

Tell me about it! :x Wisconsin requires all sail boats over 12' to be registered whether they have a motor or not. Having a motor costs more. The sunfish I believe is 12" exactly and does not require registration. It took about 3 months or more to get my registration numbers because the boat wa...

Screw thread type to use for fiberglass

Hello,

I need to screw down a tiller rub rail in a place where I cannot use nuts and bolts. What is the best thread type to use when screwing into fiberglass? TMK, there is no wood structural support where I will be screwing into.

Thanks in advance.

First time out in 2008

Well, I am heading to Northern Wisconsin this weekend with the C-15 Man-o-war for my first outing of the year. I'm anticipating that the water will still be pretty chilly, so I hope I don't dump it at all! brrrrrr! I have all but one of my repairs/projects completed that I wanted to get done. I repl...

On inland lakes when it is typically good sailing weather it isn't good water skiing or fishing weather. Choppy water from the wind doesn't make for enjoyable skiing nor does it entice the fish to bite.
