Tiller work

Hi gang, I've started working on the tiller too recently and this is where I'm at:

I applied some paint stripper on it to remove the old plastic like finish but, as you can see, there are some parts of the old finish that remain - the stripper didn't seem to work all that well. Does anyone know of a better method of removing this plastic finish coating?

Hi Bryan
I used a good sander. 80-100 grit. Took it down and re-finished from there.
Your problem w/ the rudder is from the rudder coming down when you are traveling. It will scrape the pavement. I have had this happen twice. I tie it up. Lock in the draw rope to the tiller and tie it again.
The problem is the rudder will shake and and the ropes will come off.
I pay particular attention to this when traveling.
I am thinking about some kind of pin to install.
Anybody do this yet or have a better idea??

On my 26 I just run a rope under the rudder and attach to the two stern cleats. I might make a dedicated rope with snap shackles at each end to attach to the two stern tie downs.

I'm not sure if that will work for the 22 or not.

Hi guys,

Since you are talking tillers, can I ask a small favor from one of the C22 owners that has the factory tiller? If you get a chance, could you please measure your tiller length? Mine is a homemade monstrosity, and I was thinking of buying a replacement. Idasailor has one that they say will work; it measures 44", but I would like to know how similar it is to the original. Any info is appreciated.

Mine is infact an original, and is currently not on the boat.
I will measure it as soon as I get home from work.

Hi,

for some reason, the IdaSailor tillers's butt stock is a shade ( 1/4") too narrow, it needs to be shimmed...no biggy but a pain and an addditional job nonetheless, I wanted a really secure strong feel at the helm so Iused a thin piece of alum sheet...

John, sorry it took so long. Busy night.

The tiller is 40"long, or just a hair under.
The offset is 7".

I looked at west marine and it doesnt look like they have much near that size. If need be, go longer to get the right offset, just my opinion.

Hey thanks for all the responses guys. That's what I thought - I'll just keep sanding away at this thing until I'm down to the wood all around and then go from there.

John K, I see j42goose measured 40" length on his tiller - mine is the same and I believe mine (and his) are OEM. Hope this helps you.
