D'oh ! Safety Lines

I know it's a duh but - a reminder to add a safety line/chain to such things as your outboard. I took the Cal 21 out for a test spin this Sunday, beautiful day, perfect winds, and it was only slightly :? marred by the fact that my 40#/thrust trolling motor is now at the bottom of the lake in about 30 feet of cold murky water. Yes, tightly clamped, and no idea what happened but we heard a racket and a clunk, and after immediately looking up at the rigging and around the boat I noticed the troller was gone.

That sucks!!

One time I had to remove the outboard from the mouth to the cockpit, and boy did I get scared when I noticed that in my rush, I didn't had a safety line!

I concur on the sucky factor!

I remember my father taking me in the dinghy at a young age, yielding a large metal pole and poking it into the water while I drove him around our mooring area. after about two hours he dove down and tied a halyard to our sumbmerged 6hp longshaft mariner. He then proceded to raise it from its merky depths. Very lucky.

Yeah, no kidding! sorry to hear that!


I use a steal cable for my outboards. When I move the outboard from Destiny to our dink the motor is always clipped to SOMETHING!

Yep, it was just one of those "brain out on the water before feet leaving the dock" moments that we all have to watch out for !

I always hoped the control cables would retain the motor, but another cable would not hurt.

When I was a kid and living around the water, all my family had some kind of strap, cable, rope, etc attached to their motor. (any outboard)
I have had to help friends get theirs from the bottom.
I have always used one.
