Anybody know how much fabric yardage I should order to recover all the cushions aboard ( V-berth, salon, rear quater berth area),
I did find a thread here with a diagram with extensive measurements, but does not include the salon benches and backrests. I was planning on doing this all myself ( seems ez with a sewing machine I bought) but I should have done this in the winter and I didn't , so now I will buy some sunbrella on-line (HOW MANY YARDS?) and have it shipped to the upholsterer and I will bring my OEM old cushions..
anyone have any upgrade thoguths? thicker foam? better foam? softer or longer lasting foam? memory foam for the v-berth... I only want to do this once and most of the cost I think will be teh labor, so I want to use the right materials.
anyone reconfigure their v-berth cushions, salon or 1/4 berth cushions so it is easier access to the storage underneath. I am now in a crazy mad rush to get about 3 years worth of work done in two weekends...

I live in Western NC so there are still lots of furniture business around.
One of the guys I sail with owns a foam company. On his advice I got 4 inch thick foam for the seats. I believe it was 32 density for the seats and 25 for the backs. They put 3/4" polyester batting over the fronts and tops of the cushions. I got 2" closed cel foam on the internet and cut that myself for cock pit cushions. A local guy laid off from the furniture industry is doing my cushions in his spare time. His original estimate was 46 yards for the interior and that seems to be working out close. The only place I could find plastic zippers and slides was Sail Rite. The best deal I could find on solution dyed acrylic was Shuford Mills in Granite Falls. They sell upholstry weight material retail for less than $8 /yd. There is number on the web site but I am not sure how they work long distance. I went by and picked up swatches and once by wife decided on the color I went back and paid. They shipped the material later. All in all it turned out to be expensive but the cushions that are completed so far are really comfortable.

Did you at all consider making the cushiond different sizes to improve access to the storage underneath...
I wonder if chrysler shaped them that way for minimum production cost or maximum comfort but they don't seemt o allow ez access to storage ( but how often you need to get to tehe storage)

Also..did you put fabric on the underside as well? the OEM has some sturdy white vinyl -- seems like you cannot turn the cushions over anyway based on teh shape and the vynyl makes for better wear...I wonder if it is a little cheaper too or if it is best practice...did you get this border "piping" on the cushions too?

Now I'm no expert here but I can mention a couple of things. Our old Endeavour 32 had original 3" foam in the vBirth. The previous owner upgraded to 4" foam! It was wonderfully comfortable! Our current Destiny has 3" foam in the vBirth and we have added egg crate foam and extra blankets searching in vein for the comfort the 4" foam offered! I VERY HIGHLY recommend the 4" for sleeping on.
The other is the Bottom Siders cushions.
We have them and we love them! The ones on Destiny we bought new when we bought Destiny and they still look great and maintain the color matching stripe. We stand on them walk on them sit on them, etc etc. We do use caution not to pinch them in the lazerettes when we close them. IF you tear them they still work fine but the tear is permanent. Also note if you buy Bottom Siders you will need to let the rubber coating dry for about a week after you get them No problem if you know about it beforhand maybe dissapointing if you don't know it. I have no ties to bottom siders. we just love the set they made for us! They are our second set. Our previous boat had them also.

You have the right can-do attitude.... get started - do something and congrats!
I too am surprised, c'mon, it is not alot of work to do the cushions for a 26 foot sloop, you get a mark-up on the fabric, mark-up on the foam, your labor charge -- work at night, work weekends if you are getting busy, I thought for the cushions and the boat painting, they might give me a real crazy high estimate fo r the heel've of it OR get the job and sub contract it out and make a mark-up ...but it seems people want cash for easy jobs or little or no work involved...distressing 'cause now I have to do it myself !!

The thicker foam does take up more head room in the v berth than you would think. The main thing I would look at is the retationship of the settees, the backs and the deck above. 2" can make a lot of difference there. I cannot sit up in the area's where the deck overhangs. I put a slight angle on the seat backs and raised them up.
I was looking at memory foam. My friend in the foam bussines told me it was hot compared to standard polyurethane. He also recommended adding vent holes to the hatch covers under the berths for ventilation.
Note that when I said 46 yards of material that included the cusion bottoms. We went with the Outdura (Sunbrella Type) for mildew resistance and breathability. You could use what ever is cheap there.
