When I was young, 12 ish, the old fellow next door took me under his wing and helped me convert my little dinghy into a sailboat He taught me many things and occasionally I would get to go out on his beautiful sailboat of 47 ft. Time went by and he has passed on but I have always wondered what happened to his boat.....now I know.
It was a Buzzard Bay 30, the first one built. He bought it in 1947 and renamed it "Barbion" then reconfigured the gaff rig to a yawl so he could single hand it. But it's original name was "Young Miss" and it has been restored to it's original condition along with 4 others of the 14 built. http://www.maineboats.com/boat-launchin ... ds-bay-30s
Even reconfigured she was a race horse, I can remember many a racing sailboat pulling up to see what she had and with a lazy trim of the sails she would quickly walk away. He never raced the boat but loved to just get out and day sail with friends or alone. I remember him showing me a picture from the Miami Herald I believe, of an over head of the boat while the boat was motoring along at 6 or 7 knots and the wake was all but invisible...........I was glad to see the old girl in all her glory and not half sunk somewhere being neglected.
