Mondays 04/17/2010 Question and boating safety tip. ANSWERED

Post by CaptainScott »

Saftey Tip:
Backing up trailers. Most of us at one point or another have had to tow a trailer! Our first towing and backing experience is usually one of need.
We bought a boat and now we have to get it home! However we've never actually done the towing before! Our initiation into the activity usually comes with frustrations, apprehension, and downright fear.

Have you ever hooked up a trailer and gone out with it for the sole purpose of practice towing? Have you ever tried backing up your trailer when you were not in need? You should! It is so much easier to back up a trailer when you are NOT trying to launch for the first time, in front of crowds, with your spouse and children watching, with your dog barking, your cooler spilling ice cold water onto your seats, and grandpa telling you how to do it!

Remember when backing your trailer, make all your moves slow and deliberate! Do not be afraid to stop, pull forward and try again. The only way to get good at it is to practice! Go out , back up your rig and turn the steering wheel just to see which way the trailer turns and reacts! Lastly, remember to not allow your trailer to turn to sharp! You can and likely will one day turn to sharp. Not only is it hard to recover from but you can actually hit the tongue of your trailer on your tow rig and actually bend the tongue!

Now go practice your towing and backing!!!!

ADDENDUM:

I only know one;
3=d hence Poop deck

The rest I'll need to look up.

Another pointer on trailering;
Not all trailers will back up the same, I find trailers that have a longer distance between the hitch and the trailer axle will be easer to back up because they don't react as quickly to a direction change as a trailer with a shorter hitch to axle distance. If you want to get good a backing a trailer prictice with a short trailer, then a longer trailer will be easy.

There is nothing I dislike more than retrieving the little Coronado 15 with the commuter car, because that lightweight short Harbor Freight trailer is so hard to back up. Every small change in direction results in a major change in direction ! I don't back up to the ramp as much as I sashay to it backwards !!

A little hint for newcomers to the boat ramp...if you place your hand at 6:00 on the steering wheel, what ever direction you go with your hand the trailer will follow..
