RC anyone? Radio Controlled Sailing . .. .

Post by CaptainScott »

OK, Who's got it so bad that when they go sailing for extended periods of time they take an RC sailboat as entertainment? What do you have?

I have a pair of Kyoshi Fairwinds RC sailboats! At 3' long and 5' high, they are a blast! The blue one, Lady Di, is the one I take on Destiny It is stripped of most extras to avoid breaking stuff. She was a junk craigslist purchase. Her sails were shot, she literally had holes in her hull and was stored outside under trees. Basically left for junk.

Here is a shot of her in just a whisper of wind moving along nicely on Silver Lake sportin' her fresh paint and new sails I made!

Here is a shot of her plowing the waters deep in the Canadian Gulf Islands!

The second RC sloop, also a Fairwinds was purchased and built before I married my bride! She has had many face lifts ( the boat ) and is currently outfitted to look like Destiny! While not in the photos, she has a dinghy painted to match ours, an outboard on the railing, functioning port, starboard, and stern lights that turn on via RC!

In this shot, you can see the US flag and the various penants on the spreader halyard!

This shot is one of my favorites because many folks thought it was a real sailboat vs a 3' RC sailboat!

Long gone is a beautiful RC catamaran I built! That boat was a blast and was very fast. It however was lacking in a few things. When a puff of wind it the catamaran, it did not heal like the sloops so there was no visual ques that it had just accelerated. YEs, you could see the acceleration but I truely missed seeing the boat heal. Secondly, it would flip. Not often but just enough. I once had to have a stranger rescue her for me after flipping her well out of reach. Lastly she was BIG. She was not quite as long as the sloops but she was VERY wide! What a pain to store and haul in a pickup! LOL!

Long gone are the RC planes. I was very big on the planes. The helicopter was sold in the last couple of years. All that is left is one electric buggy that goes unused and the two sloops!

OK, FESS UP!! What are those RC sailboats that are lurking in your closets? Any other RC toys? You must tell us!!

Now I am jealous...makes me want to charge up my glider and hit the field. I have come close to buying a RC sailboat but my real one seems to constantly drain the treasury. My Super Skybolt 2 has not seen the sky in ten years (needs a new motor)and my f4U Corsair lays half finished. Just not enough time and or money to do it all :)

Ive been flying planes for 20 years but haven't flown now for the last 2 years. I was big into car racing, electric off road and nitro on road. I have had several sailboats, a couple different Victor models and the last was a Northwind 36. I really enjoy building them more than sailing or flying them though.

Super pics !

I really been thinking about picking one up but no RC sailboats yet. Sounds like the perfect Father's Day gift to myself, thanks Scott, I think I'll hit the hobby shop on the way home. Sadly for me it is near the West Marine, so when I go to one I usually wind up in the other. Double pocket book hits !

Otherwise in RCland only airplanes. There is a clipped wing Cub (mod from a Hangar Nine ARF) hanging in the workshop. Haven't flown it in a few years.

Also a Top Flite Corsair fuselage (wings went in the trash after I tried to rush a takeoff and tip stalled it).

And an long incompleted Direct Connection FA-18 Hornet kit as well. The first one went in due to a bad aileron servo, but it flew so well I wanted another.

Others have been a Great Planes CAP 232, a SureFlite Spitfire, a few Great Planes Sportster Bipes, an Ace .15 bipe, old Top Flite Contender, couple of Senior Telemasters. And the big girl - a 1/3 scale Fly Baby with a 50cc engine.

I have an RC sailboat that I have not used in years, but have been viewing it lately and wondering how to modify it to look like a C-22.

I've built dozen of RC planes and crashed every one of them. The largest was a 1/4 scale electric powered Velie Monocoupe with a wingspan of about 9 feet. I bought an electric helicopter a couple of years ago and crashed it on the first flight. If there is a single tree in one acre, I will find it.
I've had cars, both off road and on, a tank that could pull two of my kids around in steel wagon.
I built and raced FAST electric boats for about seven years and really enjoyed it. A small group in the area organized six race Sundays during the warmer months, no club, no officers, limited rules and lots of fun and laughs.
I have a fiberglass Dumas Hudson 36/600 sailboat kit that I've never started but I think I'll finish my C26 first.
